Am I correct that if you author DVD's, the only logo that can appear on the disc is the type of disc it is, for example DVD-R? Can you use the actual logo, or do you need to create one yourself? Or can you not use the logo at all?
In order to use the actual DVD Video logo you must be licensed, correct?
Just trying to figure out the legal issues.

you need a lic to use the logo ... and they are very strict about it ...
see here for official info http://www.dvdfllc.co.jp/dvdlogo.htm
and here http://www.dvdfllc.co.jp/faq.htm
and the following:
Outline of the DVD Format/Logo License Program
As of April 14, 2000, DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation (DVD FLLC) assumed all responsibilities for licensing the DVD Formats and the DVD Logo.
DVD FLLC is a joint venture of the ten companies that originated the DVD Formats. It grants manufacturers worldwide the rights to use DVD Format's technological information and the know-how for developing and manufacturing products, and to display DVD Logos on those products.
For further details, please click here:
The major features of the Format/Logo License program are as follows:
1. The DVD Formats being licensed under the Format/Logo Licensing program include; DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (3.9 GB), DVD-R for General, DVD-R for Authoring, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM (2.6 GB and 4.7 GB) and DVD Video Recording. These Formats have been approved and authorized by the DVD Forum.
2. DVD Products that need to be Licensed are: any product that uses the technological information disclosed in the corresponding DVD Format Book(s) -- DVD discs, DVD drives, DVD players, DVD recorders, DVD decoders (including software decoder), integrated products such as PCs, authoring tools, integrated circuits and encoders.
3. License Fees are required for the right to use the Format Books. The License Fee is US$10,000 per DVD Format for each Product Category, as specified in Schedule A-1 of the Format/Logo License Agreement. The License also allows use of the DVD Logo when applicable.
Example: If a company wishes to manufacture DVD-Video players, they shall pay US$20,000 since they need to obtain Licenses for DVD-Video Book in addition to DVD-ROM Book, both to be used for Product Category II (DVD players).
Example: If a company wishes to manufacture DVD-RAM drives and DVD-RAM discs, the licensee shall pay US$20,000 since they need to obtain licenses for DVD-RAM for Category I Products (DVD discs) and Category II Products (DVD drives).
The US$5,000 (or \600,000) the company had paid to Toshiba or to DVD FLLC at the time they signed the NDA and purchased the first DVD Format Book will be discounted from the total payment due under the License Agreement.
4. Verification is required for DVD products marketed under the DVD Logo. The Verification process assures the consumers that products bearing the DVD Logo are better compliant with the Specifications contained in the applicable DVD Format Book(s).
Licensee shall pay a fee for the mandatory Verification to the Verification Laboratory. The maximum amount that the Verification Labs may charge for the Verification services is indicated in the License Agreement.

WoW! I can't believe $10,000 just because of a little logo showing that it's a Dvd.

seems a little steep ...

I use them all of the time. I downloaded a "package" a long time ago before DVD Burners were even available. I got it for the CD logos...but it also contains all of the different styles of DVD Logos as well including the Lucas THX, DTS surround, SACD...etc etc. And all in .tif, .gif and .wmf format.
If it makes my own back-ups and home movie stuff look a little better....
SCREW EM.
I'm wondering two things though....are what I have "official" logos?
And what the heck is .wmf format....some Windows thing?
