Several years back we purchased a Panasonic DVD Recorder (DMR E75V) to convert our family home video VHS tapes to DVD...great memories of family events. The converted dvds can only be viewed on the Panasonic DVD Recorder (DMR E75V) player. What happens if that player fails? Is there any way to remove the security protections on the recorded dvds so they can be viewed on other dvd players? Thank you for your help.

No consumer DVD recorder puts any type of "security protections" on discs it makes. As hech54 says, your discs may be unfinalized. Or they may be types of discs that other players don't like. For example, DVD-RAM discs may not play on some DVD players. Or they could be low quality media that other players don't like. Verbatim (everything but their Life series) and Taiyo Yuden are the only consistently reliable makers of blank DVDs these days. Or you could have older players that don't like +R or -R discs and that's what you've been using. Or some combination of those things.

Thank you for your replies. I did finalize discs. However, I converted onto Panasovic 4.7gb dvd-ram discs...maybe that causes them to be unreadable on other dvd players? I'll try different dvd discs to record. I'll look for Verbatim (everything but their Life series) and Taiyo Yuden dvd recordable discs. Are there any types that work best, like -R or +R? Again, thanks for your expertise.

To jman98,
Thanks for the tip about using Verbatim -R discs. I tried a new recording on a -R dvd disc. It works now on other dvd players! I guess my 26 dvd ram discs of home video will need to be redone with -R discs. Why does the industry make non-standard dvd discs? I wish I knew this info when I started this project.
Thanks Again,
