I would like to know if I can correct the aspect of a movie (an .avi file) that is sretched out (like painted by El Greco). I have too another movie (an mpeg-2 in this case) that, on the contrary, is vertically shrunk.

Yes you can. If the AVI is Truly stretched (tall skinny) when viewed with an AVI player, then try encoding it to MPEG2 (I assume you want it on DVD/SVCD?), but instead of a 1:1 source, try it as 4:3 or 16:9 source. I have seen a few of these (usually improperly converted DVD clips).
As to the MPEG, it's probably encoded as 4:3, with a 16:9 aspect ratio flag(or encoded from the wrong DAR, sort of the same thing). Try using IFOEdit to change the flag.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan
