I've been reading posts for several months detailing all of the burning woes with the DRU-500A but I can't recall any reading problems. Mine will not read any DVD+/-RW's. It burns them fine, as verified by my DVD-ROM drive and my standalone, it just won't read them. i.e., if you can't read it (to initialize the burner) you can't erase and reuse the disc. It reads everything else fine and I've never had a burning problem with any format or media. I've tried all of the obvious like latest firmware, different media including Sony, different burning software, and looked for conflicts with packet writing software. Has anyone else had this problem or have any more ideas???
btw, I've faxed my receipt to Sony so I can receive Customer Support. I just hope they don't drag it out. I only have a couple of weeks left on my warranty.

I had a similar problem, the IDE controller was not 100% compatible, so I had to disable UDMA in the BIOS and in Windows XP to fix this. When I got the nForce2 board the problem went away, so I've been using UDMA. Maybe this can help you.
