I just replaced my old CD-R/W burner with a DVD burner. It came with Roxio software, and I had a brand new version of NTI also. The problem is that after conversion to VCD as I normally do it, VCD files that fit on a 800MB CD-R using my old burner no longer fit using the new software. Just to test again, I still have a CD-R/W burner at home ( the DVD burner is at work); I converted a DVD movie to VCD "standard" and burned it to disc. The file in explorer was about 552 MB, on the disc it was something like 475 MB? or so ( I really can't remember but is was quite smaller and under 500MB), so I COPIED the file to a CD-RW and brought it to work ( I did NOT burn a VCD but just copied the data file) and copied it to my work computer. Unsing both NTI & Roxio I went through the steps to author a new VCD and both created discs that were well over 500 MB, close to the original file size.
This is quite strange. Could it be the software, or the burner? I can't use my old software as it does not see the new drive. At home I have Nero, but at work I had NTI 2000 for my old burner. I guess my next step is to try an put my old burner back in my work computer alongside my DVD burner.
Is this a software issue? Is it a hardware issue? Logically it would seem to be a software issue since I don't burn the VCD but just set it up in the software, but maybe because of the burner I have ( HIVal duel format) the software is reacting to the hardware and acting strange?
If anyone can give me a hint on this I would appreciate it.

You need to know the difference between Megabits and Megabytes.
When converting to VCD the resulting file as long as it is 80 mins or less will fit one one cd. I tend not to push it over 75 minutes.
The result may be 740MB file but that size of Mpeg if it is MPeg1 will fit on a 700 MB cd-r. You would not be able to get over 700MB of data i.e. an AVI over 700MB to fit. -
it's not the difference between megabits and megabytes that matters, it's that vcd and others are not burned the same way, I don't speak english well enough to explain, but it's something about 2 tracks and error control.

yes I understand, I know that 700MB are 716800KB and that a lot of people don't know that. I have a colleague at work (supposed to be a computer ingeneer) that was happy because he has bought a computer with 131072 KB and the dealers says that the computer has 128MB
I have completed my last message to explain a little bit more
