Not likely unless they're already sized to both fit on a 4.37GB DVD-5 disc. If not, you would need to re-encode and that will lower the quality. How much depends on how much more they need to be compressed to fit. Optionally, you could put the videos on a 7.95GB DVD-9 disc. (A dual layer disc)

You would also need to author the MPEGs to the DVD standard if you want to play back on a set top DVD player.

I also changed your title to fit with our rules.

    And welcome to our forums.

  3. As redwudz suggested, since it is already compressed for MPEG-2, re-compressing will lower the quality further.

If it was an AVI file, I would have used Half-D1 resolution in FAVC.

Since it is an MPEG-2 file, I am not sure exactly which is the best tool to compress it further. But it is possible, there will definitely be loss of quality.

  4. use dvdrebuilder free version everything you need is inside the download and if your using hcenc (free)make sure the best mode is ticked it'' give you good results better than dvdshrink and even better with procoder ($) or cce ($).

Honestly ? I would put HCEnc up against either of those encoders. It is faster than Procoder and produces better results, it is slower than CCE, but produces much better results at lower bitrates. And 4 hours on a single layer disc means a low bitrate. Rebuilder also requires an authored DVD as input, which the OP currently does not have.

@missyfy - it would help if you posted a mediainfo of the source file so we can see what you have. It may need a little work, or it may need a lot.If the source file is already small enough to fit on a single layer disc, go for it. At least you can't make it worse. If it is larger than a single layer DVD (4.38GB - and don't forget there are authoring overheads to accommodate as well), then you will only reduce the quality trying to squeeze it down. If quality is important then you really only have two options - dual layer or two discs.
