  1. Hi, does anyone know why Virtualdub will work one minute but not the next?. I am trying to use VDub for capture from VHS via an Easycap type USB device (I know they are not great but that's all I have) on my new Lenovo Ideapad. I installed VDub, connected the device to one of the available ports (though I did connect it into a USB Hub as there are only two UBS ports on this laptop and I'm using the other for my mouse). I was able to get an image in the window when I initially clicked on Capture AVI, but now I'm getting nothing. I have checked the output settings for comp, S video etc, but composite is selected. Either the version I have, or maybe the capture device, seems problematic. I have had the same problem on my old Toshiba Satellite. Maybe the drivers are conflicting. I have tried different ports on the hub but still nothing.

The best VDub version for capturing is 1.9.11, according to Lordsmurf. Get it from Digitalfaq. You could try AmarecTV which some of us use in preference to VDub. I have a tute on my website.

But why would it work one minute but not the next?. Last night it was working, but now it won't, all I get when I clicked on "Capture AVI" is just an empty window as if it hasn't deleted the signal from the composite cable. Dunno if it's a fault with the drivers, the capture device (which wouldn't surprise me given those devices are not very good) or something else or maybe the version of VDub I am using. The version I tried yesterday was an older version from about 2 years ago, but strangely some of the settings where there that the newer version didn't include, like for instance "timing".

As for AmarecTV, as far as I'm aware it won't work on 64bit systems only 32, and my Ideapad is 64.

Did you check that the device appears on the list under the 'device' menu ? And did you set a capture file ?And check the options under the 'video' menu for preview etc.If a program is 32 bit it will work on a 64 bit system. The reverse is not so.

Yes the capture device appears on the list under the 'device" menu, I set the capture file too. For some reason the version I'm using (VDub2), under "Video" is lists:
    Preview (system)
    Display with Filters
    Preview field mode

The previous version I installed didn't include those. But none of them seem to make any different. Like I said, I managed to get it working yesterday (only just) but now I can't. Could be my crappy capture device or something conflicting. I have a USB device conneted into a cheap USB hub I bought off ebay as there is only two ports on the Ideapad, one I am using for the mouse). Still doesn't work even when I connect it directly to the laptops UBS port.

You're right it does, on my new IdeaPad is does but it would never work on my old Toshiba Satellite (64bit also). I managed to get a signal, but after I selected a codec and then installed the Lagarith codec it wouldn't work, also it kept saying I needed to purchase codec, yet from what I read if you download version 3.0 or earlier it shouldn't be a problem. Why aren't these programs ever working right?.

    I'm just getting this now:

For VirtualDub the recommended version is 1.9.11, for AmarecTV is 3.1.0

I downloaded a version of Debut Video thinking this would not work either and it detected my capture device. Why VDub isn't I don't know. On my Toshiba laptop Debut video wouldn't work, initially it did for a while (a long time ago) but suddenly it wouldn't detect the capture device. Gotta be an issue with my capture device or drivers.

Well vdub2 is a little different to the original vdub - the menus etc., for example, are not the same so we, at the very least, need to know hat program you use else we are all 'barking up the wrong tree'.

Whilst a 64 bit OS can run a 32 bit program I am not so sure with codecs. I have used Amarectv3.10 with my own 64 bit OS I would guess that the codec is also 64 bit. And the same goes with vdub/vdub2. The 64 bit version did not see the 32 bit codec originally installled whereas the 32 bit version did.

But dare I say it. If you have been screwing around with versions/codecs and expect all still to work then they will not.

But the codecs doesn't explain why I am not getting any a signal. It seems to detect the device but nothing else happens.
