  1. I have an older analog camcorder that I'm transfering to DVD thru my trv33 digital camcorder and my PC. I've tried several programs, like movie factory 2, image mixer(came w/camera) and now wintv. Wintv worked great but now I have like (6) 2.66 gig files. How to I convert avi to mpeg with all these files? I've been using Tmpgenc. I tried Ulead movie factory 3 and the second dvd turned out choppy and pixelized. Been looking at all the guides but became a little lost. Any help would be appreciated. [/code]

    Hi rpd162,

    Check out this link:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=725433#725433

It's not a definitive guide and I'm not claiming it's the best way, but it's the steps I took to get results I was happy with. I have since edited it as I've learnt more (they're in there too).

Your only difference as that you're doing analog through a DV cam, whereas I'm transferring from a DV cam. But the principals are the same.

The choppiness and pixelation could be down to the original footage - does this occur during fast motion scenes? Or when you're panning fairly quickly? Or hand-wobble? Failing that, it might just be too low a bitrate.

Reason is that the encoder sees this as fast motion and a higher bitrate should be used to deal with it.

Read up on CBR (constant bitrate) vs VBR (variable bitrate) - There's a link to a really good guide in the link to the post I gave above.

    Good luck...

try bbmpeg , its free , and dose just about every form of mpeg you need , even a nice mquant value setup .

2 gig of avi gose in
    Avi is 352x288 pal 25fps
Open bbmpeg , ADD avi , hit encode or start , goto settings , locate video settings tab , here I choose mpeg1 , pal defaults , and mquant = 4 (default) .

Locate audio setup tab and lower to no lower than 64 , now hit go button .

    Result is a 352x288 pal mpeg1 file the size of 500mbs .
Burn as non standard vcd , or burn directly to cd at 4 or less speed .
Remmember , burning as vcd will require an addititional 100mbs for vid .

If mquant = 6 , it should come out at about 360mbs or less .

Dont go any futher than 6 , video starts to pixelate badly .

    Give it a try ..

  4. Ok, thanks for the advice. I think I got it down now, I use Wintv to capture, TMPG Plus to convert AVI-Mpeg, TMPG author, then DVDshrink to compress and burn. Any other suggestions? I noticed TMPG is REALLY slow to convert, why?

Nope - Sounds like you got the basics. Try it out on a DVD re-writeable as a test to see if you're happy.

TMPGEnc can be rather slow, especially at higher quality settings. Just one of those things... I leave mine to run overnight.
