  1. Just bought one of these and having real problems. Plugging in video through the scart and starting recording. Seven seconds later, I get either a disc error using DVD+RW discs and it freezes using DVD+R. Only way to turn it off is to unplug at the mains. Discs are then read as empty.

Has anyone else encountered similar problems. Just read a few horror stories on Amazon. And has anyone found a solution other than getting replacements / refunds?

    thanks

  4. I've tried five different types of media - well known brands such as TDK, HP and Phillips and two less known brands, all of which work fine on my Sony PC DVD recorder. Looks like it is knackered, going back tomorrow and see if they'll cut me a deal on the Panasonic.

    Thanks for the help

Have you been trying to copy 'copyright' material?

    Have you tried other inputs?

What happens when you record off TV?

  6. Not trying to copy released materials - just old compilations of music tapes I've collected over the years off the TV. Haven't connected the TV or tried component inputs, but the problem seems to be disc related in any case. I've had a few other people say they've had the same problem so that's good enough for me to take it back for a refund.

I've seen similar issues on the cheap +RW recorders where discs just hang, but not on the Philips 75. I've got the 75 myself and it works like a treat.

Let us know what you get as a replacement. Good luck.

All too common, don't think so, I have done a couple hundred dvd's from tape and tv, only disc errors I ever got were with Philips +R's, got 2 out of 25, I don't use those anymore and have not seen a disc error since. I do use Ritek, Arita, Memorex, TDK, and even a few Khypermedia's and have had NO errors.

Philipl ... I'm not having a dig at you, but maybe you should do some testing with the DVDR75 if you get the chance, and you may just find that it is an excellent recorder. I was a 'Philips non-believer' too before I put it through its paces. I tested it and tested it looking for faults, but I couldn't get it to do a thing wrong. I've since bought it and it is simply fault-free, and I have no coasters!

How many companies offer fw updates that include new features for your recorder? Panasonic, for example, don't. If you want the new features you have to go and buy their latest recorder. At least Philips are still providing new features for their older models.

Give it a test. You might be surprised!

Thanks Philip. I do appreciate your comments. For me, I like the fact that I know I'm going to be able to add any future features to my Philips recorder, and not have to go out and buy an updated model. I don't see this as a negative, but that's just me. I guess I will be a Philips customer for some time!

    Cheers,

    Andy.

I am sure it does everything it needs to do, and provided it keeps working it can't be any worse than Pioneer's latest offerings.

I find the RGB scart input on European models gives the Philips a huge advantage over nearly all Forum offerings including Pioneer,Toshiba,JVC(but not Panasonic) which give only S video or Composite input-quite important when your average digibox gives an option of RGB and Composite output only.

I have the Panasonic E20, in addition to the Philips DVDR75. I was really disappointed when the E50 come out minus the Scart connections that the E20 has, and no RGB. This was one of the reasons I went with the Philips 75 over the Panny E50. And you're right, there's a lot of cheap & nasty stuff at the bottom end of the market, some of which I've tested, and most of which is crap!

  16. Thought you'd like to know they replaced the machine and the new one works fine and they gave me a new scart lead as well! Works fine, just done my first conversion, James at Glastonbury 1990. Fantastic it is.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Glad it all worked out for you in the end! Let us know your thoughts once you've had a good chance to put the unit through its paces.

    Cheers,

    Andy.

  18. I have had the DVDR75 for about a week now. Until yesterday, I had only used +RW discs, with no problems. Excellent picture quality using the component connections. Then I started using +R discs and have had nothing but problems. Within 10 seconds of hitting record the image on the TV freezes, and the unit goes into standby. Now I just tried to record a +RW disc and the same thing happend 3 times in a row for that media as well.

I am in the process of installing the firmware upgrade now and will let everyone know how that goes.

Otherwise I like the unit quite a bit. I do wish it allowed for pass through of progressive video and digital audio. I will have to purchase a splitter/amplifier because it does not (please let me know if anyone else knows of a workaround for this...)

Hi Dave" You are not alone with this problem. I had my unit for six months, in which it performed flawlessly, up until two weeks ago when it stopped recording to +r disc. It still recorded to +rw without any problems, although I only use these disc for setup and test purposes only.
I use only the +r disc to transfer from vhs to dvd. When I insert a +r disc in the unit and press record, the image freezes in record mode for 15 seconds and then executes a complete power off shutdown. Sent the unit to Phillips a week ago. They replaced the laser assembly. This did not fix the problem. I am now sending it back a second time for the same problem. I only use the best name brand disc, such as TDK,SONY,MAXELL and RITEK. I also own a Panasonic E-50 which I must say is a more durable machine, but the Phillips recording image quality is a step above the Panasonic especially in the M1 M2 M2.5 and M3 recording speeds.
Hopefully Phillips can fix this problem, or else I may have to spend more on a better machine such as the Yamaha DRX-1 dvd recorder.
