    Hi,

I have a Phillips DVD 8801 drive that works 99.9% of the time on 4.7 GB DVD+/-R. I bought some cheap double layer discs, and non burned very well, 7-8 did not even show up as being burned, 1 or 2 would read on the pc, but none would read in my stand alone. Then, I bought a 3-pack of Memorex DL +R discs, and none of those will play in my standalone, while only one would even play in my PC.

After checking the forum, everyone said use only Verbatim DL discs, so I bought a 10 pack. I've tried one, and it's failed once again, does not even show up as being burned on my PC. Before I go and try burning any more of them and winding up with 10 coasters, am I missing something?

The Dell website has the specs on this writer, and it says that it should burn double layer discs no problem as long as they're +R, which mine are.

The Verbatim discs say they were made in Singapore.

    Thanks for any help!

If you're not using IMGBURN to burn those VERBATIM DL DVD+R media that could be the problem. Try using it and see what happens.

FYI the Phillips DVD 8801 drive is a rebadged BENQ 1650. You could crossflash it to the official BENQ firmware which you'll be able to use QSUITE to tweak your burning but it would void your warranty. Or upgrade the drive with the latest PHILIPS firmware.

Thanks, I'm trying IMGBurn right now, I had tried about 3-4 other programs, and none were better than each other. These are 2.4x discs, so it's taking some time to burn them, but I'll post whether or not this fixed the problem.

    Another coaster.

This time, it burned, ejected for about half a second, and then brought the tray back in. What is up with that? It shows up on the PC that there is data on it, but my standalone doesn't recognize it.

    Help! Thanks!

Tried one more time, let it completely finish this time, and it seems to work fine, but I now think that my little portable stand alone DVD player just won't read a DVD+R DL disc, maybe it's too old. but Windows seems to recognize it just fine.

You could be right about your portable dvd player not being able to read DUAL LAYER DVD+R media. Have you tried the DL disc in another standalone dvd player?

No, I haven't yet, but I am planning on it. I have a Phillips recorder that is supposed to be able to play dual layer +R discs, but I haven't had an opportunity yet. Thanks.
