Right so I have a 795MB mpeg file that would burn Ok in nero, but its not encoded as a vcd. So I tried to burn it as a non standard that didnt work because It wasn't going to burn in mode2 (I need more space on disk) anyway my standalone plays raw mpegs fine so I was wondering If I could burn this mpeg as a vcd (even though it isnt) and have it work on my DVD player because it plays all types of mpegs, I need to burn it as a vcd to be able to fit it on.
Sorry for the bad explanation.

you say that your dvd will play mpegs so why do you have to make it vcd? just burn the mpeg and play it. If not take your file and put into tmpgenc and use tthe vcd wizard and it can automatically resize the mpeg to fit as a vcd but you will lose qualilty.

When I try to burn it as non-standard it says I need a 90min disk, but it shouldnt for a 795MB file should it, wouldnt it need an 80min?
-
If your player plays MPEG files directly -- just burn the file to a CD-R as if it were data. Don't author as if it were a SVCD/VCD video file.
If you are using Nero, just use the DATA CD template/wizard -- select the file and burn it. If you don't use Nero -- do the equivalent with whatever program you have. -
Yes but my cd-r only holds 700MB and the file is 795, but this should work when burned as a vcd because it is written in a different way.

It might help if you can tell us the properties of the MPEG file in question here.
Such as:
1.) MPEG format (is it MPEG-1 or MPEG-2)
2.) Resolution
3.) Bitrate
4.) Audio format and birate of the audio file
Also if you are asking this question then it is a safe bet to assume you don't have a DVD burner. Shame on you. They have been around the $100 price range for some time now.

Burn the mpg as either vcd compliant or vcd non compliant in nero under the vcd burn mode, choose svcd mode if its svcd.

Setting your software up for 'overburn' will give you a few MB, but not 95. lol
By any chance does this file have credits or a long title you might trim off and make it 700MB+overburn?
You can re-encode and lower the bitrate, but you're going to loose some quality.
How about the audio? Can you lower the bitrate of the audio to gain some needed space?
Maybe... Setup for overburn, lower the bitrate of the audio a tad and trim off a few seconds here and there and mabye it might fit???
Good luck. -
Yes but according to this https://www.videohelp.com/faq#740 you can burn 800MB of vcd onto an 80min disc, do you see where im going?

You are right with what you want to do, a vcd will hold 800mb but to repeat what has been said, see if it's an mpeg1 and if yes then using Nero burn it as a non compliant (x)vcd with Nero. If you have a very forgiving standalone player you will get away without converting the mpeg to a compliant vcd. Try it on a cdrw if your player accepts those although cdr are pretty cheap. Even if it doesn't work on your player the file will be ok and on a disc so it will work on your pc and still be backed up. You can't lose. -
Another point.
I just noticed you also said:

When you drag and drop this file into Nero does it go through any kind of validity check with a window showing that it's adding a file. If yes how long does it take. After the file is loaded in the "track" window, right click on the file and check the property attributes.
P.S. also see my comment on where to drop the file. -
Oh yes I've used Nero for years and always go through the mpeg checking (takes about 2 minutes) after it is done I click turn of standard compliance but when I try to burn it gives the error in my picture, i'm telling you there's something strange about that file.

Right so I decreased the bitrate of the audio and cut of the credits, it JUST fit on with overburn. But i'm still curious as to why it was burning as mode1 and only letting me get 700MB on a cd instead of 800.
-
Did you write the cut file as a vcd? What size is the dat file now. If it's maxed above (about) 800mb then the original video's filesize was being reported wrong.
At least you got it done but if your still curious enough to play with it, I would look for some type of corruption in the original file. Had you tried the tmpgenc demux and remux features on the file/mpeg tools menu?

I know your experienced. I haven't made a (x)(s)vcd in 10 months (dvds nows) but I only half believe what I just said.
Are you sure that the dat file is ending up in the mpegav dir. I can see "videoCD" in your pic and the filesize shown should fit on a standard 80min cd. Before you try to burn what size is the mepgav dir in the Nero window? Could Nero be finding data in the wrong place ie the root dir and treating is as non video? -
Well the new file is burnt and the DAT file is 824MB

uka100 I have a fix for you. you have run into a nero bug. TI cropped up in nero 6 wherre vcd /vcd souldnt be burned to 800 mb as usual. upgrade your nero and you will be fine!

uka100, I use Nero 55.10.28 so never would have guessed that.
But I should have remembered one of the golden rules: When logic fails blame Nero and you'll likely be right. -
Well I was using Nero 5, but Ive updated to nero 6 (6.3.0.2) when I get the original file back we'll see what happens
.

Well I fixed it without losing any data or quality, I changed the header to VCD by multiplexing it in Tempgenc, it added 15MB but it fit with a slight overburn.I think non complient vcd's are burnt in mode1 (data mode) in nero.
