  1. Hello,
I d/l an avi file, converted it with TMPGnc and used TMPGnc AUTHOR. Everything seemed to go smoothly until I played it in my standalone DVD player. Picture was great but NO SOUND. When I try using the same DVD in my computer everything is fine, I get picture, sound the whole thing.

What could be wrong and why will it work in the computer and not on the stand alone.

    Thanks,

Not absolutely certain but I think this behavior can occur when:

    1. The DVD is a DVD-R ...and...
    2. The player is an older one that reads DVD+R but not DVD-R

...the video works but the audio doesn't...

...however I'm not absolutely certain of this (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Which would create an mpeg with mp2 audio. No problem on PC's but not supported on some DVD players. I would guess that is the problem.

So you need to author your DVD's with Ac3 or LPCM audio.

  4. Just so you have all the info, I am using a new Sony Burner with DVD+R disk in a virtually new standalone DVD player.

    Thnx

  5. Is there a guide on how to do that? Or can you offer a little help?

There are lots of guides on may things <===== Over there. Or you could do a forum search. Do some reading and find one that suits your purpose. When you have problems feel free to ask questions.

Use ac3 audio and try this Guide:
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php

If your avi doesn't have ac3 audio, you will need this Guide to convert the extracted wave to ac3:
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/129419.php

... even though, Vegas Video($) provides the best (and most compliant) way to convert wave to ac3.

Well ... I prefer InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2 to create DVD compliant mpeg videos.

Link shows which button to use to convert the file to a mpg video with 3 choices of audio ... mpg audio ... ac-3 audio or ... LPCM [wav] audio.

So WinDVD Creator lets you create an file with AC3 if it has say a wav file to begin with? Or does the orig file already have to have AC3?
Ive been encoding with pcm instead of mp2 just for comaptabilty issues, but hate the space pcm takes. So, would this let me make an mpeg with ac3?

Yes ... but ... so far I can not get TDA to use a mpg video in the menu with AC-3 audio ... I have to use mpg audio or LPCM.

Just so you understand ... I'm talking about the video I use in the menu of TDA.

For the actual movie ... InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2 ... will make a Mpg-2 DVD Compliant video with audio of your choice ... 3 choices ... I choose AC-3 audio.

And you better have a NTFS system on the drive where you save the file to ... a 2 Hour movie can be as large as 7 Gigs. If you use the HQ setting.

  12. OK, going back to the original post, I've solved my problem. My standalone DVD player has three (3) audio settings.
    1. DolbyPCM
    2. Stream/Dolby
    3. PCM

It was set, I belive per the setup instructions, to use stream/Dolby, I changed it to Dolby/PCM and BAM, I had sound.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions

Oh yeah .... check your settings in your desktop player ... oh you have oh ok ... he he he

Yep been there ... done that too

Electricity shut off here ... about 2 weeks ago ... had a effect/affect on my JVC DVD player settings and on my settings in my Pioneer VSX - D912 AUDIO/VIDEO MULTI-CHANNEL RECEIVER.

I had to re-assign my digital and coaxial input settings. Wierd ... never had to do that before.

Pain in the butt ... moving the setup away from the wall and crawling back there to check ... what the ... $%&#* ... is wrong.
