  1. I'm trying to convert my vcd MPEG1 to dvd MPEG2 format to MPEG 2. That’s all I want! I searched all the forums and downloaded all the programs needed but I still cant figure it out with all the techinical mumbo. Please someone give me an idoit-proof 1,2,3 step guide to converting these files. I orginally had avi files that I converted to mpeg1 with TMPGenc, but now I want to convert these files to dvd to burn to dvd-r. From what I picked up from the guides I dont need to re-encode to files and I just needed the program called "dvd ptach". Well I downloaded the program but I don't know how to adjust the settings to convert to mpeg2. Or maybe I got this all wrong and I need a different program altogether.

I tried the dvdptach and tried experimenting with the different sizes and settings however nothing came out right. Im currently using TMPGEnc DVD author and when I inserted the files the thumbnail screen would display the wrong demensions (e.g. the video was compressed meaning the the video would be on the top half and the bottom half would be blank?) Please help a hopeless newbie....

    techjunkie22,
I think there maybe two possible solutions. If, you have the avi's from the original encode, you would be money ahead to reuse tmpgenc to reencode to mpeg2. But if you are like me and deleted the avi to save space, fear not all is not lost.
I have converted many vcd and xvcd into dvd's which play quite nicely in my standalone. All that I had to do was demux the vcd mpeg1 inot its video and audio streams. Then resample the audio from 44.1Khz to 48Khz with any number of programs. I believe even tmpgenc will do that as well. Anyway, search on the left panel for audio resample tools.
Once you have your new 48Khz file, use tmpgenc to remux the video and new audio together. You will then need to feed this into your authoring software and then burn with your favorite dvd writer software.
I was orginally skeptical about this process but it does work for me very nicely.
I would shy away from reencoding the mpeg1 to mpeg2 unless absolutely necessary. I think the loss in quality would be unacceptable. It was for me.
I am certain that in a few minutes you will have at least 3 more methods to help you along.

  3. Thanks so much for lending your expertise. So to sum it all up Demux and then Remux with the new converted audio file? Also would I have to convert the video to 48khz as well? After remuxing would it be 1 file or 2 separate files? Would these new files be accepted by the Tmpgenc dvd author? Thanks again!!

Why convert the mpeg1 to mpeg2? you can make dvd compliant mpeg1. youre are not gaining anything from turning a mpeg 1 into a mpeg 2. the mpeg 2 file will justr be a lot with bigger, with no difference in picture quality.

  5. Nevermind I found the guide I needed. Guess I worded it wrong. I just want the mpeg 1 file to be dvd compliant. I'm using Tmpgenc dvd author and it won't let me load the mpeg 1 video files because its not the standard 29.93 mpeg 2 dvd format? Mines is 23 point something which I guess is the mpeg1 standard. Thanks for the help ed...your much appreciated.
