I was searching around and apperently (according to some other people) its possible to update the firmware on a DVd-burner so that it can read duel layer disc (in the future of course) . So I was wondering when the duel layered burners are released (this may or later im heraing?), Will it be possible to simply update firmware (providing the manufactuarer supplys it) so my burner can write to duel layered discs? cause I just bought a new burner and I would feel kinda bad if all i had to do is wait 3-4 months and I could of bought a duel layered burner.

yes you will, pioneer have already done tests on dual dvd writing
they used the A106 model burned 100mb on each side of disk in the test
and they said a simple firmware download will make anyone who has
    a pioneer A106-DVR106-D 4x drive a dual writer. happy now? :P

Did they? Can you link to it?

  5. Reality Check!

It is not in Pioneer's best interest to make a firmware to do this!

They are going to make you buy an new burner!

    Profit driven industry!

Except, at CES, they demonstrated DUAL (not duel) layer burning specifically on A06 and specifically mentioned that the user could do it with a simple firmware upgrade. Why else would the pioneer people mention this?

They demonstrated the ability simply to show that they can do it, and to build up hype around the technology. That is the main function of CES.

After demonstrating the new firmware Pioneer went on record saying that until the dual layer DVD-R standard is finalized they will not decide on whether the firmware upgrade will be released, or if people will have to buy a new burner to get dual layer capabilities.

Yes they can do it, but we'll have to wait to see whether they will let us do it.

  8. Would it be possible for one who knows their way around firmware pretty well to write up a dual layer firmware after looking at the firmware of a dual layer burner of the same brand? If they can allow 1x discs to burn at 2x, and unlock the ripping speeds of burners, and we know that current drives can do dual layer burns, then can't one of those firmware geniuses figure this one out after taking a look at a dual layer burner firmware?

Those hacks youre talking about are much more simplier than writing a new firmware or modify the old writing strategy to dual layer...

I've learned from other technical hobbies that no matter how hard the work or smart the people at Company X ... there are at least 3 people out there NOT working for company X that are smarter, and often at least 1-2 of them do things underground. I can see hacks being made if people know it can be done, hard or not.
