    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on why Nero constantly hangs/freezes during regular CD-R Data CD and Music CD burns?

I already reformatted my PC and tried a different CD-RW drive that I know works, but Nero constantly freezes between 4% - 51% into the burning process. In addition, I cannot even successfully burn through WinXP Pro Explorer. In addition, the only way to open the drive is to totally power down...as if in the middle of the burning process, the actual drive power is dead. i also tried a different power cable to no avail.

The issue seems to have surfaced when I upgraded firmware to my DVD 200i, but is still happening when replaced with my original, working CD-RW drive.

I am running the same exact setup, installed the same minimal apps, using the same media and using the same Nero versions (5.5.10.25, 6 Ultra), as when I used to be able to successfully burn CD-Rs.

    My issue remains:
What is causing my burner to crap out midway through the burning process?

    Thanx,

    John

  2. I don't know this from experience but...

It is possible to "break" the CD/DVD Drive when updating your Firmware. Did you make sure the Jumpers are correct on the back of the Drive? I know some burners don't like to be set at CS (cable select) or slave. The must be as master. In all honesty if you tried different CD/DVD drives then I would suspect your Power Supply might be takin a crap. You can get a new PS and case for under $30 now a days. 500watt PS are around $15-20.

After further troubleshooting, I have found the following:

    1. I have two exact same PCs with the exact hardware/software/OS setup
    2. I tried both CD-RW drives in each, with jumper settings identical
    3. Both CD-RW drives complete burning process successfully in PC #1
    4. Neither CD-RW drives complete the burning process in PC#2
    5. I used power / IDE ribbon cables from my 2nd HDD, (within PC#2), for my CD-RW, but same issue
    6. When trying to burn through WinXP Explorer, after pasting (apps, images, docs.) to the CD-RW drive. It locks up / disappears from WinXP Explorer.

    Any additional suggestions?

    Thanx!

  4. Try this:

If you have XP - Go the device manager and delete ALL the drivers IDE controllers. Then reboot and XP will reload them. If you don't have XP you'll need the disk, I think, to reload the drivers. Then after it's done go back to the device manager and make sure, under advanced settings tab, that DMA is selected and not PIO or whatever the other choice is. That might work. If you don't have

    Thanx for responding.

The quote of the day is: "Never Overlook the Obvious."

Through my troubleshooting efforts, I found that one of the IDE connector pins on my mboard was bent. This obviously was dropping the connection to my CD Drive, and must've been caused by not placing the ribbon cable in correctly.

Again, thank you for your assistance, and yes...she's a hotty
