I just used Tmpgenc to encode a small xvid encoded AVI clip I had. It worked fine. Which means that Tmpgenc can process xvid files.

There are tons of threads by people unable to open this or that AVI file with Tmpgenc or another program.

It comes down to two things in general:

    1. codecs have been messed up and the program doesn't know what to use,

    2. Specifically with Tmpgenc, the VFAPI plugin priority sequence was changed and the appropriate codec wasn't used.

I would Start Tmpgenc, go to Options-->Environmental Setting and to the VFAPI plug-in and right-click on the list selecting "Reset to recommended Setting" first. That might just work if you have altered the sequence. Read some of the relevant threads also.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

TMPGEnc does XviD's jsut fine. Your problem is either:

    1) Corrupt AVI
    2) Bad Codec.

It's #2, bad codec. XviD is several ways to render by itself, much less confusing the issue with FFDSHow. Rebbot/uninstall XviD/Reboot/Install latest version of XviD; this usually fixes the issue. Also, try using the 4cc changer and chaning the headers to divx/divx. This works for me 80% of the time. The other 20% I frameserve from VDUB. Never meet an XviD I couldn't convert (and I capture a lot of TV shows to XviD for my kids, over 2000 hours of cartoons to date).

  7. NICE. I fixed it. All i did was uninstall it and installed it again. You might want to put that in the guide for stupid people like me.(i guess somehow along time ago i messed with the options).

Also is there a way that i can choose which type of mpg to make? I am trying to convert it for use in impression pro. Impression didn't take the mpeg that it converted it to. It only takes .... mpv. m2v, mp2 (mpeg2s) or mpv, m1v, mp1(mpeg1's.

TMPGEnc has built in templates for VCD/SVCD or DVD. You will find others on the Tools section of this site.
