Is this common with this drive? I just bought this drive yesterday, and man can it rip FAST! It's GREAT! Only thing is that I noticed that when I first put a DVD in the drive, it makes a strange, LOUD whirring sound, then after a few seconds, it quiets down as it reads the disc. It makes this same sound when you push the eject button, right before it ejects the disc. It makes a loud whirring sound, then slows down and spits out the disc. Also, when it begins ripping, it starts out kinda slow, then it speeds up and starts ripping REALLY fast. Is that also common for this drive to start out ripping slow, then speed up really fast? Any info would be appreciated!

  2. I've got the 165H and it makes a funny noise when doing a disc load / unload too - I would hazard a guess it's the clamping mechanism being released. My drive is getting hammered to death and still works a treat, so I wouldn't unduly worry about it.

You might find they use the spindle motor to drive the tray as well as the disc, in which case the noise you hear could be a centrifugal cam moving into position by the drive spinning the motor up and "flipping" the cam into position to drive the tray. Again, nothing to worry about unless the disc ever comes out still spinning !

LiteOn uses a system of ball bearings in their balance mechanism.

They make a loud noise as they spin up, and the weight s of the BBs distribute to balance the disk.

Go to the site to check this.

    Cheers,
