Hi Guys
I'm not sure if my media is corrupt or my drive is bust.
Ok the problem lies when I back up a movie using Bulkpaq orange DVD-r's with my lite on 411s.
1 in 5 work but normally they come out scratched. I use nero 6 to back up my discs. Its says that burning was successful but when you take out the disc and look at the surface they are scratched and my DVD players fail to read them.
It burns cdr's and cdrw's fine it just happens with DVD-r.
I've got a good mind to send the drive back.
I was wondering if anyone else had the same sort of problem?
PS I burn at x2 speed
Thanks
Paul

It's your burner's POOR firmware. Get rid of the Lite-on and get a Pioneer or Sony. If you want to be able to use nearly any DVD-R media out there, get a Pioneer.
-
It's the drive causing the scratches, send it back.My Lite-On 165H DVD-Rom does it to my disks so I don't use it much anymore.
I doubt it's the firmware,I think it must be mechanical like the tray sags.
BTW..have you tried another brand of media or burn software to rule out the drive? -
they come out scratched
Diffenately I would have to say firmware is not an issue for physical damage
I would say it's the drive, something not lined up correctly letting the disk hit the tray?
Would be good to try a different brand disk, but none should actually rub the tray no matter how cheapo. But if they are a little extra thick or warped a bit it could happen I geuss. -
I bought some cheapie CompUSA DVD-Rs to use with my 411-S...they're crap. Burned 3 so far and only 1 works well. #2 burned "successfully" but failed in the verification and couldn't be read on any of my DVD drives.
Don't give up on this drive until you try some high quality DVD-R discs... -
I can't beleive most of the replies here! If the discs are coming out scratched there is only ONE cause for it and that is the drive itself.
Possibly firmware? How in the heck could you ever think this? How about giving some constructive assistance instead of this BS!
Media's fault? Again how does a disc scratch itself? Come on!
The drive is obviously defective so just return it for a new one! There should NEVER be a single scratch on a DVD or CD when burned. Lasers NEVER physically touch the discs so scratches are inpossible (unless the drive is defective and something is physically touching the disc). -
It's not your firmware for sure.... I would say if it's drive causing these scratches and if you just got it I would return it and get a new one.
I've got the 411s and have no problems at all with it. -
The 411S beats the Sony's and the Pioneers. Now and then you get a dud, no matter what make..return it and try another one. This is a Hardware problem.

It still plays okay on the dvd player, but will not play in Powerdvd. The other discs also don't play using PowerDVD. -
Well I said maybe media because that CAN happen, though unlikely.
I have had bad disks that were somehow warped. I had cheapo CDS once that would wear on the edges badly. Thought it was the drive till they did it in other players even worse. ONLY those disks would scratch up that way and they did it in several players. My other disks in the same players never got scratches at all.
So it could be a media problem, though it's rare. If it touches it scratches, doesn't matter if the media is warped or sagging or if the drive is out of alignment, if it touches it is scratched! Most likely the drive is the problem though. Good use for a coaster of a different brand
Stick it in and let it spin awhile, then see if it scratched also.
Also I played a DVD -R in a PS2 and it rubbed so bad it trashed the disk on the first play, non of thier disks seem to get scratched but then again this was the only one of mine that ad that problem, so It could have been either.
As for the 411s, I burned my first coasters ever when I bought this drive!
First 2 disks showed to burn leadin and stuck at 16k for severral minutes then said burn compleated! Of course those were coasters!
Made some changes and updated the firmware and tried again, 2 disks compleated in the correct time and showed to be done correctly, but they will only play the menu!
Can't select and play anything. I can use the skip button on the remote and skip through a few things, but not much.
Looking at the disks, they have a white foggy area in the begging of the burn, about 1/4" -1/2" in. I think that's the area that plays and once past it the disk is trash and can't be read. These are RITEK G03 printables and the files have been burned and worked in the past with a toshiba sd-r5002. So I know it is NOT a problem with the files or my disks!
My disks are not scratched at all, they just don't work! Ritek is one of the recomended medias for this drive also! Lite On tech support is in on Sundays! I called them and the tech guy said it sounds like I have a bad drive since the same disks (g03) and same files burn with my toshiba, my software, and work perfectly. He said I should return my 411s to place of purchase, only had it 24hrs at that time! -
Since I updated my 411s to latest firmware, I have burned many DVD+R/RW and -R/RW, never any problems. I use Ritek brand medias exclusively, because it's what works for me. Don't want to waste money experimenting with other brands, specially if they are just a few cents cheaper.
I agree scratch disc can only point to hardware issues. Exchange for a new one and update it to latest firmware. You will have one of the best burner on the market.

I own both a nec1300a and a liteon 411s.
First of all, the ultra cheap compusa dvdr's work GREAT in my nec1300a. I havent tried them in my 411s.
The liteon 411s S*CKS. Even with the updated firmware, it only reads dvd movies half the time. I've had more problems with that crap, but I have grown the trust the liteon name. No more of that for sure. Plus, it's too late to return it. -
Hi, I was wondering if the original issue had been resolved as I too am experienced what I think are "scratched" disks on a 411s.
Approx 7.5mm from the centre of the disk is a 0.5mm circular scratch covering the entire circumference of the disk.
The disks burn OK in Nero 6.3 and RecordNow Max 4.5 but fails on verification or copying back to the HDD with a CRC error. In RecordNow Max the error code is 'command: 2A Sense: 05'.
I'm using Bulk pack orange and Ritek disks with the same result. I have noticed a very faint scoring on the CDs.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers BF
