The process is called "capturing". For this you will need a capture card. You can find details about this in the "capture" section of the "how to" Guide on this website.

Normally when you buy a capture card you receive a correspondent software for this. Normally too, the software let you capture from cable TV, regular TV, VCR and others. I recomend you buy a MPEG or MPG NOT MJPEG or AVI CAPTURE CARD, so you don't need to convert from .MJPEG or .AVI file to MPEG file because this process spends much, much time. All most cards capture in .MJPEG or .AVI file.
Dont' forget that all DVDPlayer Units only read MPEG/MPG files.
Note: MPEG and MPG is the same thing.
    I hope help you!

It is possible to grabb satellite channels in real time.
    You have to options:

    1. A nokia dbox - 9500 - 9200 - 9600 - 9610 digital satellite receiver, with DVB2000 firmware (www.dominance.net/overflow) No encoding need for (x)vcds, just remuxing. But re - encode to XVCD (like SeVCD) remains amazing good! (Far better vhs)

    2. A pc card like: TechnoTrend DVB Sat, TechnoTrend DVB Cable, Hauppauge WinTV DVBs, Siemens PCI-DVB Sat, Siemens PCI-DVB Cable, TechniSat SkyStar 1 (no SkyStar 2 !), Galaxis plug.in S
    with windvblive! software (http://www.odsoft.org/)
That software is something like dvb2000 for nokia receivers
