  1. hi all

hope someone can help, i just did a file scan of my pc using norton antivirus 2002 (all upto date with definitions) and found no viruses, so i then used the AVG anti virus and found a virus called

    trojan horse downloader.istbar.au

but it couldnt be removed, so i put it in the AVG virus vault. I cant find no instructions on symantecs website or any other reference to remove it. Can anyone help, i really dont know why i get so many viruses, i have 2 scanning softwares and a firewall.

    kas, thanks

I could not find any information on that virus. I looked at Norton and Mcafee's websites. I did a google search on it and similar names. The only thing I was able to find was a google cached reference to a TrojanDownloader.Win32.IstBar.au virus that was identified 1-6-04.

It looks like whatever it is, it was just identified and not all virus scan softwares have been updated to idenitfy it or remove it yet. I'm sure more details will emerge as it is more widely identified. It looks like for now the virus vault that it is quarentined in will have to do.

    kas187,

When you open Internet Explorer, does it load a normal homepage (one that YOU select) or a porn page? Is this what it is?

Have you run Spybot Search & Destroy on your system? If it is Adware, then Spybot should rid you of it.

Norton AV 2002 is pretty old -- are you sure you are running with the latest virus definitions? I'll bet that your subscription has expired and you are actually running with the latest def's as of your subscription expiry.

Go to Trend Micro's website. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

At trend you can scan you PC on line and it will clean the virus if you wish but the best part is once the scan is done and it finds one, it takes you to a page where the Virus name is a link to a page that tells you all about the virus, tells you how dangerous it is, what it does, how it travels, other file names for it...AND how to get rid of it. Walks you through it step by step complete with Registry edits and all.

AND best of all it's FREE!!!

If you are still on a dial-up, relax for a while because it will download the definitions and it takes a bit but the scan is done from your own PC, so after the definitions download you can surf while it scans.
