  1. Hey

I have tried with mv2 and wav, and also mpeg2, but what ever i do it has no sound. I open the finished vob on my hard drive, and the video is perfect but the sound is not there. I have tried mp2, pcm audio, but no go.

B4 i use the author, i open the mpeg2 up and the sound is fine.

    Any advise?

    Hi jamrop,

Use either of GSpot or AVICodec (can't remember which, maybe both) to ascertain the rate of the audio for your source file.

DVD audio must be at 48,000 Hz. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if VOB files with audio at a different / lower rate won't play the audio part.

You can use VirtualDub to extract the audio as a .wav and then change it to 48,000 Hz (or just change it if you already got .wav only).

PCM audio (also known as .wav) takes up a lot of space on a DVD (@ 1,536 kbps), leaving less for video (and other stuff). Consider using AC3 audio (I use ffmpeggui - see Tools - to do WAV -> AC3) as there's little loss in quality, but much smaller - 192kbps (usually user defined, the lower the less the audio quality. Don't know the minimum).

The audio can also be in MP2 (@ 48,000 Hz) - but I believe only acceptable if your standalone DVD player is of European origin. ffmpeggui also does MP2.

    Hope that helps... Good luck.

    Hi jamrop,

Mmmm... I had the same problem when I first tried DVD authoring and it was the audio being at 44,100 not 48,000.

But, seeing as you've tried that, I'm afraid that's the extent of my knowledge.

I presume you've tried the audio alone, after it's extracted from the source audio/video file and made sure that that's OK.

I do know that the TMPGEnc DVD Author doesn't actually reproduce AC3 audio when you're creating the chapters (though it does play in the video once VOB files are on the DVD). However, it does play the PCM audio when creating the chapters.

My guess would be that there's something unusual with the original, or it's the way you're extracting it.

Give exact, precise details of the original file format e.g. video = mpg1 or 2, is audio VBR? etc. as well as what you're doing with which tools. Someone may then spot your problem and step in to help.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck.
