  1. I have a AVI captured from a Sony D8 camcorder through Pinnacle
Studio 8. When I tried to open the file in virtualdub, it gave me
    an error message:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to
decompress video. DirectShow codec, such as those used by
Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Other tools such as tmpgenc has no such problem. When I used avicodec
to look it the file, avicodec reports that my system supports the file.

How do I resolve this problem?

    Search Comp PM
Go to the Tools section at left, look up "Codec". Find a DV codec (Panasonic and Canopus are two that come to mind), load those puppies, and call it a day.
    Hello.

  3. Hello,

I got a new Sony camera (TRV33) as well and had the same problem. I got the same : "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' in Vdub. I am also new at this. I did A LOT of searching and found this site for codecs: http://dshow.narod.ru/codec.htm

I downloaded the Sony_Software_DV_Codec_v.2.23.exe file towards the bottom... It's an easy install and it worked! If any expert wants to answer these questions, it would help me out:

1). Why does Sony not provide these... This is a very common problem I see looking at the forums. Why is this file so hard to find?

2). The codecs listed here on this awsome site will supposedly work, I have not tried... are they better than the actual Sony Codecs for this?

3). Quick : What is a really good program for capturing DV? I have tried V Dub, Windows MM and others. I cannot find one that will capture and recognise breaks in the video... i.e. blank spots and break it up automatically into different files. You should be able to do this with the fie wire link.

    Thanks!
