hey, i got a 160 gb maxtor hard drive for christmas which i put into my firewire external enclosure. i mainly want to use this drive to capture video from my firewire dv cam, but how would i do this? the enclosure has 2-6 pin firewires, and my laptop and cam have 4 pin. so could i just get a 4 pin to 6 pin cable, and hook my cam to the hard drive, then the hard drive to the computer? would this work? or am i stuck capturing to my internal hard drive, then transferring to the external one?

Can we assume that the laptop has only one 4 pin firewire
which is connected to the drive with a 4to6 pin cable ?
USB and firewire were designed to be multiple device protocols,
but I think there are device types like masters and slaves.

I think you should try it and tell us how it goes.

You have to wonder why the Drive enclosure has 2 connectors.
Maybe 1 is to replace the one you used up on the laptop.

yes my laptop has 1-4 pin connector, and its connected with a 4 pin to 6 pin cable to the hard drive. i read somewhere that firewire continuous or whatever, so that you could connect multiple devices all at once. but i am going to get another 4 pin to 6 pin cable to connect my camera to the hard drive, then use the cable i have now to hook up the hard drive to the computer.

anyone know where i can get a cheap 4 pin to 6 pin cable? i know newegg has them for a couple bucks, but i dont want to wait to get one.

I have a Sony laptop with a 4-pin Firewire connection and I have a Maxtor external firewire drive, and I had no problems daisy-chaining my camcorder to the spare Firewire connection on the hard drive. Of course, now I have a Firewire hub and I don't need to daisy-chain devices.
