Notice I didn't ask for the "Best" ?
I was just wondering which sata 500gb hard drives are good for capturing vhs to AVI.
I read that single platter are supposed to be good.
I already have a pata os drive and have an open sata-2 bay open.

price wise there isn't much difference in 7200rpm drives. the fastest are probably the samsung f3 drives followed by the western digital black, but the rest aren't far behind. any 7200 rpm drive is more than adequate for normal capturing.

Is Hard Drive cache important in capturing? Samsung F3 500MB 16MBcache or WD Black 640MB 32MBcache or 64MBcache
and is there a real world difference in single or two platter hard drives?

No. The cache only has advantage for repetitive data. A capture is a stream of non-repetitive data.

Which is your capture method and "avi" capture format? Uncompressed capture is borderline for a single drive and subject to drops. Most use the Huffyuv codec to moderate data rate to a single drive.

Ok. Any 7200 RPM modern drive will handle that. WD has had better reliability vs. Seagate/Maxtor but this may be old info.

Not for nothing, but it should be "decent", meaning adequate or passable (in this instance).

"Descent" means to sink or go to a lower level, which would suggest that you want a bad or at least very low-end hard drive.
