I have been lurking on this forum for awhile and recently purchased the Plextor 8X DVD Writer (external). I have been backing up several of my DVDs using DVD Shrink and Nero 6.0.0.19, along with the Memorex media. The process proceeds smoothly without any trouble.

My primary DVD player is a Panasonic RP91, which based on some research, appears to be fairly compatible with all DVD formats including +R. However, movie playback starts to deteriorate with many digital artifacts during later chapters, and in a couple of instances stops the movie altogether. I can however take the problematic discs to a my PC and laptop and play them without any trouble. I also had my friend try to play them back on his Sony player, and he did not have any trouble.

I was burning at 8X on the 4X rated discs, so I have now been trying to scale that back. Should I just try different media?

    Thanks...

I've made about a dozen backups with Memorex +R media and have had zero issues. Your problem, I strongly suspect, is that you are burning the media at a speed it is NOT designed to burn at. Slow it down to 4x and I bet your glitches will disappear.

Thanks Bodene - so far today I have successfully burned 2 titles at 4X without any apparent glitches. I suspected this was the problem, but was a little confused by the fact the other players did not exhibit the same behavior - I guess my RP91 is just less tolerant...

  4. IMO, Memorex DVDR SUCKS! Of course, there will be other who disagree but the ones you do say "it sucks", will always outnumber them. I started off with Memorex and later alot of my fine backup accomplishments started to fritz out during play. Also, having a less-forgiving standalone, can add to my woes! I played my Memorex backups on my brother's APEX and that's bombed too. If it did it on a play-all player, then something's screwed!

    Thanks...

Hey DoubleShadowIce you do know that all Memorex DVDR discs are not made by the same company ? Which type did you try and have have trouble with ? Was it -R , +R , -RW , +RW , or RAM disc ? I'll bet it was with a -R disc as they are made CMC Magnetics . This company is famous for its poor quality discs . So next time instead of saying brand X discs are all bad find out who really makes the ones you are having trouble with . A statement such as I had a problem with brand X DVD-R made by a company with the media code MANUFACTURERY0001 would be a lot more helpful to people . Especially to newbies .
Keep it on the big cam !

  7. True, Depends on the Format od the DVD, I used some Memorex -R (needed - for a rush job) ='d CMC manufacturer. They played fine all the way to the end in testing tho.

All the +R Memorex I've had so far have been the Ricoh media and works fine for me. Same media code when I check as the TDK, & Fuji +R's too.

Right now if (big if of course) you can burn and play +R format Best buy has them on sale. I bought the TDK 4X +R there sunday for $119 a 100 pc spindle.

    Cheers

I use Memorex +R 4x media exclusively (on my LG GSA 4040) and it plays flawlessly on my RP91 (with the latest firmware). You may want to try burning at a slower speed first, if that doesn't help matters any then try other media.

RICOHJPN makes most of the DVD+R media for Memorex. Great discs.
CMCMAG makes most of the DVD-R media for Memorex. Garbage.

It depends on which Memorex DVD-R disks you buy. I have some 4X DVD-R disks in jewel cases which are made by CMC, which are crap. I also have some 2X Memorex DVD-R disks in jewel cases that have a media code of PRODISCG02, which is actually pretty good media. A while back I had some 4X DVD-R disks made by CMC in 25-pack spindle and all 25 burned successfully at 4X with no errors. CMC must have been having a good day on the day they made those disks.
Keep watching this forum. Some day Memorex may change the company with whom they contract to make their disks, and the DVD-R disks might start being good, and the +R become crap. You never know.

Recently Memorex has had trouble meeting demand since they put their 4x spindles on sale, and I've found a few +R spindles that have CMC dye! These discs are SHIT.

Check the disc after you've burned it with DVD Info Pro, and see what it says the manufacturer is. If it's RICOH then the problem is with your burning technique - maybe slow it down a bit.

But if it's CMC then return the discs to the store.

Wow - thanks for all of the great information. After downloading DVD Info Pro (great tool), it appears my batch of Memorex +Rs is manufactured by Ricoh. I also saw that Best Buy had the TDKs on sale, so I may give them a try too. I will definitely run DVD Info Pro on them before using any though to ensure they are acceptable.

Since reducing my burn speed to 4x, I have not had an issue.

bluntman - I was thinking about upgrading my firmware for the RP91 as well, but my remote is packed away in storage (we are in the process of a move).

Anyway, thanks again for everyone's input.

Good deal. Even though the 8x "can burn on standard 4x media", it's far from guaranteed, and some have better luck than others. Do a quick search (or start a new thread) for what media people have had good luck with 8x burners.

I did buy the 100 pack of 4X TDK +Rs today from Best Buy ($119, after $70 instant rebate). After running DVD Info Pro on one of them, turns out they are made by Ricoh as well ...
