dont bother buying Sony dvd writers. they are very picky about media. i own a dru500a and along with many other people, have problems burning at 4x, even ritek, the most popular dvdr will only burn at 2x max.
another point, what happened to the buffer memory? from 8MB to 2MB. shouldn't improvements be made instead of the opposite.
basically, anyone whom already has a dvd burner and wants to upgrade to a 8x writer, they should wait a while till the dual layer burners are out. that way we wont need to compress our backups anymore. -
what burning program are you burning with waheed, i but ya its nero....try using tmpgenc dvd authors dvd writing tool, i haven't made one coaster with it yet
"If u cant eat it - u dont need it"
"Baby - If i dont hit it, Who will?"
"Why is Abbreviation such a long word"? -
Ive tried many burning programs, including nero, recordnow max, dvd decrypter (for dvd5) etc. they all gave me the same result, i can only achieve 2x max with Ritek G04 4x disks.
I also emailed sony techinal support and the response i got was "ritek is not a supported media"... so basically, that says it all. my bro has a poineer dvd writer and the same riteks will burn at 4x successfully using any burning software. so its definately the sony burner thats the problem. -
Finally, pricewatch has the Sony DRU530a for $239.
Still looking for the Pioneer 107 which supports -R at 8x -
waheed i hate to say it but it sounds like u need a firmware update i bought my sony 500 back in may and it came with firmware 2f i burn using ner0 5.5 only i have record now but never used it and i burn everything at 4x except some cheap gq disks i got from fry's that were lead data which i hear are garbage i only use memorex fuji and tdk all work great at 4x
What we have here is failure to communicate!! -
Yes , Sony drives are picky about media . Its because the drive wants to know what the hell its burning . If you cant burn at 4X its because the info on the disc says its not capable of those speeds ( the ritek problem seems to be related to where the code is on the disc ) . I have no problems burning at 4X with my 500AX using any of the well made discs available ( TDK , Verbatim , and Memorex ) . I would rather have a burner that was looking out for my best interests ( burning good discs ) than one that burns any kind of disc blindly .
What is the deal with these people who claim they have never made a coaster ? If you have never made a coaster you havent been doing this long enough .Keep it on the big cam ! -
I have burned over 1000 dvds, yes I have burned coasters, but I have usually always figured out the problem....I just say the people that dog the Sony drives dont know what the heck they are doing. First of all, always keep latest firmware and good version of burning software. Used Ritek on my 500a and 510a, burned at 4x no problem. I have one Optowrite now and 3 Memorex 8x drives. Even though I dont my sony's anymore, I have nothing but good things to say about them. We burned alot of good discs together.

they put me to the drive test online for sony burners and my drive failed
great i thought a new drive but know they say its for indication purposes only whatever that crap means. -
Well, I will have to agree with waheed, the Sony Drives are very picky when it comes to meida. I've owned a Sony DRU 500A for a long time and burned a lot of dvd's with it. I buy the 1x cheap media from Compusa and burned alot of good dvd's then the Sony starting toasting a lot of them. I pulled my hair out trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Finally, I did track it down to just the Sony drive being to picky with the media.
Read on Sony's web site, they only support about 4-5 specific brands of media.
I just bought the new Sony 530A and boxing it up and carrying it back and getting the Plextor PX-708A.
I would have to say I really like the Sony 500A, with the expection of being to picky with the media.

My Sony Dru 500ax with the latest firmware update(2.0g) wont write many discs at 4X BUT....i have found one that will and thats the GREY top datawrite classics 4XDVD-R Discs that write a full disc in 16 mins..EVERYTIME!
I have tried all sorts with no joy...It is very wired though because i have written a Image from my Harddrive at 4X but the same YELLOW Datawrite discs dont write using the COPY disc method in Record Now Max.
I love my Sony Its the Dogz!
