All of a sudden my computer can't find my Sony DRU-510A CD/DVD drive. I used it every day for 3 months, then one day nothing. I looked in "my computer>drive with removable storage" next to the "A" drive (floppy), where the "D" drive used to be, nothing. No picture no nothing.
I then installed a second CD drive I had laying around, same results.
    Then I clicked "menu>accessories>system tools>system information"
Then I clicked "components>multimedia>CD rom", the screen is blank.
    Then I clicked further down "components>storage>problem devices" This is a copy of the screen;
    MITSUMI CD-ROM FX120T !B IDE\CDROMMITSUMI_CD-ROM_FX120T_!B________________B01_____\5&7208D00&0& 0.1.0 Failure using the VxD loader.

I don't know what to do next. I did try to put the windows XP disk in the Sony, the drawer opens, but it does not know there is a disk inside. I also tried a music CD same results. I have looked on Google, and here for forum posts but I haven't found anything.
    All help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Mike.

  2. Does it read the drive(s) in the BIOS? When the computer is booting up? If not you might want to go into the BIOS/CMOS and make sure it's there. That'd be where I'd start. You could also try SFC (System File Checker) in the run prompt. START- RUN- type COMMAND then type SCF/SCANNOW and then follow the prompts

    ok
Start>run>comand gets me to a DOS type window.
    I typed SCF/SCANNOW then I get;
    C:\DOCUME~1\MIKEHE~1>SCF/SCANNOW
'SCF" is not recognized as an internalor external comand, operable program or bath file.

As for recognizing the drives in the BIOS at start up. I looked durning start up, but the DOS screen the used the say things like "keyboard: detectid" is not there. It just goes to the "welcome" page. I have no idea how to go to "BIOS/CMOS" Would you tell me?

Also when I restarted the computer the "new found hardware"widow poped up. It said "new found hardware multimedia controller", the next window is the installation window, it says something about the Pinnacle studio 8 program I have and the multimedia controller (in one sentance), so I put in the disk and clicked next", but it does not give you a chioce of looking in the "D" drive, because the computer think there is no "D" drive.

In the Device manager>sound, video and game controllers>properties>multimedia controller, It says "Device status" "This device is not configured corrcetly (code 1)" I click "reinstall device" but again it can't read any disk I put in.

    Thanks Mike

Sorry my fault typo It's SFC/SCANNOW

Well usually to access the BIOS you repeatedly press or hold the DELETE key while you computer is booting up. So as soon as you press the power button or reset start pressing the correct key. Some Motherboards and OS's use different keys though such as F1, F5. The bootup screen should tell you if not just try those keys if it shows it. If it doesn't you can change that setting too once you get in the BIOS/CMOS. It will be called "Show diagnostic screen during boot sequence" or something like that. BIOS/CMOS are describing the same menu screen for the MoBo. I'm sure someone will post as to why they're different
Also when I restarted the computer the "new found hardware"widow poped up. that's correct, since your CD-ROM's don't show up in the BIOS. You have to fix that 1st then worry about the windows settings
In the Device manager>sound, video and game controllers>properties>multimedia controller, It says "Device status" "This device is not configured corrcetly (code 1)" I click "reinstall device" but again it can't read any disk I put in.
Ok, this might mean that the BIOS does infact see the drive. If you want, right click the device with the yellow warning and click disable, then click the ADD NEW HARDWARE icon in the control panel and see if it finds it. BUT... Make sure it's there thru the previous steps I talked about. Once you verify that's it's in the BIOS then reboot and see if that works. It doesn't have be 1st but this will make sure the motherboard reads it first so you can look at the lights on the CD-ROM and watch them go blink, blink, blink, which means the MoBO is talking to it, and it will/should be in the bootup screen. I've had this problem to and it's not hard to fix but it's kinda time consuming I gotta go I'll check this later for your results and see how its going
P.S. SFC = system file checker... Sorry 'bout that

    Heres what happened in order.
I typed in SFC/SCANNOW and a window pops up called "windows file protection" inside it says "please wait while windows verifies that all protected windows files are intact and in their original versions. This takes over 10 minutes with the progress blue bars moving everyonce in a while. Then the window disappers and back to the same DOS window again ready to do it again. Another line with the same C:\DOCUME~1MIKEHE~1_ The _ blinks, I belive this is called a curser.
I did that 3 times the same all times.
Then I went into the BIOS (I found its F2 on my computer). Under "Secondary drive 0" It shows the Sony CD/DVD drive. Drive type "auto" Capacity "N/A" Under secondary drive 2 it finds the other CD drive with the same settings.
Then I disabled the devices in the device manager, and did the add hardware thing (too meny steps to list). Then the screen said "windows sucessfully enabled this device but it is not working properly."
Also don't sweat the SFC SCF thing I'm happy as can be you are helping me at all.
    Thanks again Mike.

  6. I bet if you remove your audio drivers(sound card) your drives will come back.

I just had this problem last week on a friends computer. I had to uninstall his sound card, then after 2 reboots the DVDR and CDR came back. Then I reinstalled the sound card....

    YMMV

    Thanks, I tried.
Out, reboot, check, in, reboot, check, out, reboot, check, in, reboot, check. no differance at all.

I was able to down load new drivers for the multimedia controller, so the multimedia controller is now off the problem device list. New drivers for the Sony burner won't install though. The screen said something like "drivers only support Sony products, No Sony burners found."
    Thanks Mike.

    Thanks
I did it, results were the same as before. I then uninstalled the secondary IDE channel, and both burners. Restarted the computer, the "new found hardware" balloon at the bottem right of the screen poped up said "new found hardware Sony DRU-510A" Then a new balloon poped up and said something like " there was a problem installing ........" If happened both times so fast I couldn't read the words.
    Thanks Mike.

  10. Oh, I just remembered what my problem was.. I had the burner as slave and the CD-ROM as Master. Switched the jumpers and it works like a charm. Don't think that's your problem but its worth a try. Mine worked fine for a few days then didn't read the CD-ROMs anymore.

I had a similar problem a couple of times with my Dell running Windows XP, my computer stopped recognizing all my optical drives. A Dell tech. gave me the following procedure, it is a bit complex and I do not know if it will work for you:

First unistall the Secondary IDE controlers from the Device Manager,
    then:

Go to the start menu, select RUN and type in "Regedit"

you will see a list of folders

go to the following folders in this order:

    HKEY_Local_Machine
    System
    Current Control Set
    Control
    Class
4D36E965-E325-11CE (make sure you get the right folder)

Now, you should see a listing which includes "lower filters" and "upper filters"

    Delete both.

    Restart the computer.

I have done this a couple of times in the past 2 years when I have installed and uninstalled burning software and have lost my optical drives. This has worked everytime.

Good Luck, let me know if it works for you.

I have been way to busy. I just tried your instructions. It worked exactly untill I got to "4D36E965-E325-11CE" I do not see the filters. What I see is
    File 0000
    Sub file DigitalAudio
    File 0001
    Sub file DigitalAudio
    File 0003
    File Properties
When I click on each, the screen to the right does not show anything about filters either.
    Would you help somemore?
    Thanks Mike.

Just click on the 4D36E965-E325-11CE folder, not the ones that expand from it. When you select the 4D36E965-E325-11CE folder, you should see the list with the upperfilters and lowerfilters in the rightside window. (they have a little "ab" icon in front of them).
