  1. I have been successfully editing dvd's recorded on my standalone Philips dvdr 70. The problem is that whilst editing I am not hearing any sound. The final "product" has sound and all is okay but the problem is that for instance when I recently edited my son's school nativity play I was guessing ehere to edit it by using only the video. Is this a shortcoming in the programme? Do I need a special Codec?

I thought about editing in Virtualdub - no sound there either but I managed to get round that by intsalling a codec ac3 but it makes no difference to TDVDAuthor.

I was also hoping to use DVD shrink to quickly rip off the same kind of thing so for instance if I only wanted a small portion in the middle of a DVD from the Philips I could use Shrink to cache it, get to the part I wanted quickly and cut it out - as you can do with other DVD but it won't work - it just crashes. I know you can rip it with Decryptor etc or TDVD author makes its own cache but that all takes HD space and time.

The Philips is a standalone and writes to VOBS file and AC3 audio.
PC is 2.8 Athlon, G-force 440 8x, 120gig hdrive and all other sound appears to work.

I would be extremely grateful if anyone could make any suggestions of how I can get DVD author to work or another program which will give me sound during editing (I have the same problem with DVD Lab but strangely enough TMPGenc + has given sound during editing since the installation of the AC3 filter). Sorry it's long winded but I have tried loads and read loads and searched on forum and my head is nipping

  2. as for the no sound issue. TDA does not support AC3 audio. there is no way currently to make it preview AC3 audio. It can allow it to pass though unchanged but can't process it in any way. Supposedly they are coming out with an AC3 plugin for TDA soon though. I believe it was suppose to sell for $28, not a bad cost considering the licensing fees on AC3.

TDA does not support AC3 audio
is that why when i do a compliation of 2 movies TDA tells me one of the movies does not have any audio (when in fact it certainly does)? if i process the movies anyway will i have audio in the finished compilation (on the one movie that TDA says has no audio)?

  4. I just TDA a DVD with AC3. Do you have separate files for Video and Audio? I got the same warning when adding the second mpg. But when I pointed to the second AC3 file in Audio tag. TDA was fine. TDA does not support AC3 during preview. However the final output is just fine.

  5. asisoft
the files are together; the 2 movies are outputs from DVD Shrink that i wish to create a menu system for. and yes i believe all my Shrinked files have AC3 audio (either 2 or 6 chs).

  7. not having had that exact situation I don't know what to tell you on whether it will produce correct audio or not. you'll have to try it an see. If not you can use smartripper to extract the AC3 audio into a seperate file and load it seperately asisoft mentioned.

on the Phillips issue are they from a RAM disk or a full burn on a +r? If its on RAM its not VOB files its VRO. I haven't messed with RAM but its quite possible Shrink doesn't support VRO files. If you are certain its VOB you can try to just copy it to the HD via explorer. drag and drop or copy and past. there is no encryption to knock out so no need to worry about using a ripper, other than the ripper tends to go faster than a direct file copy in Explorer. once on the HD see if shrink will open it. if not you can delete the BUP and IFO files and use IFO Edit to built new ones. this may solve the problem as well. Of course its to the HD you may not need shrink at all anymore.
