Lately I had some trouble with the installation of the LG4040B. Partly my own fault. I have my HD on a ATA100 RAID controller on the mainboard, my LG4040B as Master on the the Primary IDE, and a Plextor CD Burner and Pioneer DVD ROM/CD-ROM as Master and Slave Respectfully. When I went to the XP Pro controll panel under device it would list my LG as only a CDROM device and consequently would make coasters giving hardware or communication errors. However, when I moved the LG to the secodary IDE and the other two device to the Primary IDE, XP Pro finally detected the LG as a DVD burner as it should. But here's the wierdness part. It detected it as a LG GSA 4040B SCSI CDROM device as well as the Plextor and Pioneer DVD-ROM. SCSI? I have no stinking SCSI. It is possible that Clone CD when it creates a virtual CD drive it re-assigns all devices as SCSI but I dought it. Also, I am unable to flash the drive to Ver. 301 as the updater, although it detects the drive, fails the flash. I'll uninstall the Clone CD virtual drive and see if that helps. The Flasher might be confused about the SCSI designation. Anyway, any thoughts are appreciated. Also, when the manual says to install the LG 4040B as Master on the Seconary IDE, IT MEANS IT![/u]

I only have my 4040B and a Samsung Combo drive on one "chain".....but I have them both set at CS (Cable Select)....especially since my computer is a Dell with XP Pro. I could not believe my eyes when I opened the computer case but there it was....both of the previous CD Rom type devices were set at CS on the jumpers and both worked perfectly. SO against my better judgement I put the jumpers at CS on the 4040B and it's working perfectly.
Just a thought....it may not be the best thing to do but.....when all else fails... -
From what I've been noticing on these forums is that the drives behave differently from user to user with no real pattern developing in terms of drive designation. Some have theirs as master with slave on secondary, others as slave on primary or even as master on primary and all seem to work fine for some but not for others.... As I said; Wierd.

But what is primary and secondary IDE?? you have two ide channels on most mobo and AFAIK there is no difference between these two channels... otherwise other mfrs would need to state which ide channel their device must be connected to. You need to find out what OS and what mobo people are using to make any conclusions. 8)
