    Weird problem with Windows XP.

I just upgraded to Windows XP *Final 2600 Version* and captures seem to lose 1 frame every second of capture. On my previous OS, WIN98SE, I lost 1 frame every minute or so and the CPU Usage remained @ 95%-100%. In WINXP, the CPU Usage goes as high as 70% MAX... Odd? Can it be that VirtualDub isn't XP Compatible? Everything else is the same setting (codec, format, etc.).

Well, I managed to capture with minimal frames loss (2 or 3 frames loss every few minutes) when I downsized the capture resolution to 480x480 (originally I captured @ 720x480). The CPU Usages still goes 70% MAX when capturing @ 480x480.

It still puzzles me why I lost so many frames within a minute under 720x480 (I lost 300+ frames in one minute of capture).

If already can resolve this, I would appreciate it...
Just for reference Windows XP is very similar to the NT/2000 OS Architecture, so this issue probably would have surface if I installed Windows 2000...

    Hi

Any other comments on XP, thinking about installing it myself. Did the test on another machine and it did not like a creative sound blaster 16

I see Norton utils 2002 is out for it as well, it also complained about 2001.

On a irrevelant note: Windows XP is awesome. =) Vast improvements and all.

Had very minimal problems, but there are workaround (ie my VirtualDub issue).

    "Please Note:
It is final code - all bits are final. There is no activation required and no timebomb to worry about."

Now how many times have I heard that, hope people have a good firewall. 14 days !

No it's not my machine, because on WIN98SE (before I upgraded), it ran smoothly.

    Here's my system specs:
    AMD Athlon TBird 1.33GHz
    MSI K7 Master Mobo
    256MB DDR Micron RAM
    GeForce2 MX 200

Same system, different OS, different results.
Currently I'm capturing @ 480x480 and lose 10frames every 5minutes, which I can bare with. But of course, if I'm doing something wrong in WINXP, tell me. (I do the same procedure for capturing in WINXP as I did for WIN98SE) =)

I never fixed this problem. I have been capturing @ 480x480 since then. Does anyone have new, helpful information for me so I can capture @ 720x480 again please? Thanks for any input.

Some new information I found out ->
The reason why I lose 10 frames every 5 minutes was because of my sound card (SB Live). It couldn't keep up with my video capture so it intentionally dropped one video frame to keep the audio in sync.

Hm. I just 'fixed' my problem. I just installed Windows 98SE (dual boot system with WinXP). And I enabled DMA on my HD in WIN98SE, and captured @ 720x480. It ran flawlessly with Huffy Codec and ZERO frames dropped. =)

So now I got two OS but I got what I wanted =)
I have to say that WIN98SE is the best OS for capturing, Windows XP isn't that great cause it will only 'use DMA if available' if rarely happens.

  14. I have both a PCTV Pro capture card and a WinTV PCI card. I installed XP with the PCTV card and used the Windows 2000 drivers. The pinnacle apps worked. Virtual dub would capture, but with much loss of frames and the sound was too low in volume. Now, I realize that the line-in may have not been selected in the recording properties; but I don't think that would explain the frame loss?

I took out the PCTV card and installed the WinTV card using the latest WDM drivers first. The WinTV apps worked fine. Virtual Dub would only capture at a max of 320x240.
I removed the WDM drivers and installed the Windows 2000 VFW drivers. Now everything works! Virtual Dub now can capture at 640x480 with good sound and No frames dropped! Hauppauge provides an app that can capture to mpeg1 on the fly and it is working quite well. The Wintv apps work. The Vidcap32 program works fine. This is only the first day, but I am quite satisfied for now with these results.

I think Pinnacle is supposed to release a real XP driver when XP is available in stores. I do not know if it will be WDM or VFW drivers. I will try them out whenever they are released.
    Anya rules!
