  1. Hi I'm new to thi but i've used the decrypt/shrink/copytoDVD method of copying my dvds they copy fine but when i play the dvd+r's in any other player they don't work. Weird thing is that the same file on a dvd+rw works great. Has anyone ever heard of this?

  2. Welcome to the wonderful world of DVD-backups! This is one of the problems that can occur when you play them on your standalone player, it might not work, just as -R and +R can work more or less good, the same difference applies to the +R +RW and -R -RW from my experience.

Yes, same for me with my Voxson 250. Plays DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW, but doesn't even think a DVD+R I tried is a disc. (Same DVD+R works fine on my Pioneer 344.)

My writer (Pioneer A06) can't set compatibility bits. My parents bought themselves a Ricoh DVD+R/RW writer recently, so next time I'm there (could be months) I'll try writing a DVD+R, with bits set, and see what happens.

Either way, with my current hardware, I'll just stick to DVD-R's for movie backups.

Shit ass brand X media will sometimes cause compatability problems like that (work in one player but not another even though both support DVD+R).

So ... what kind of MEDIA are you using?

  8. Let's see if we're clear what the problem is. So your Apex player will play a +RW but not +R? If so, the problem may be at least partly due to your Apex. The fact that your +R doesn't play in your friend's player is not definitive proof the burned disc is faulty. Run DVDINFOpro to check the disc for read errors. Although my player is a different model number, it also will play rewritables, both -RW and +RW. Until I upgraded the firmware on my writer, my Apex would not play recordables in either format. Now it WILL play -Rs. 8)

So what to do? See if there are any firmware upgrades available for your writer. Check for updates for your burning app. Try another burn program. If your writer is dual-format, try a DVD-R.

For fritzi93 and others in this string

I gave about three of the APEX DVD Players AD-1010 ... for my friends last Christmas 2002 and reports came back they wont play DVD+Rs.

Wierd is ... I loaned Die Another Day burnt on a DVD+RW and my lady friend said nothing but ... nice job after she watched the movie.

It was a compulation made with TMPGEnc DVD Author ... the movie and the Madonna music videos were added to it.

Now I use DVDShrink to add the music videos from Disk 2.

So ... yes .... DVD+Rs ... can be a pain in the butt.

My old LG player (LG 5083) can only play +RW, I've read some stories that some people were able to play -R and +R but I never got it up and running (no matter what brand, el cheapo's and top brands). In the end I bought a new player cuz I got tired of messing around with all kind of programmes and settings, and above all ... so many coasters.
