  1. I've checked guides which are misleading, I've downloaded programs which didn't seem to do the trick...etc.

For criminy sakes, I can copy dvd's, convert avi's to dvd and author them without a problem, but I can seem to get a ripped dvd into divx format...can anybody point me in the right direction

    As always, thanks a million...

  3. I just tried VDub and it didn't work like I expected....

    1) it only opened one vob file...is there a way to open a string of vob's?
    2) only the first 10 seconds ran then the screen went black...eh?
    3) interlacing problems? (horizontal line variations on fast motion scenes)

    Any more help?

  4. I've been messing with FairUse and its got a rather simple wizard interface with a very good quality result. give it a shot. it can select one title at a time which means the whole movie in most cases regardless of how many VOB files are in it. if you want the extras too or if you are doing a episode disc you may have to back up each part seperately. I know episode discs have a different title track for each episode. I haven't tried an episode disc yet myself.

Granted I have limited knowledge on video file conversion, but I found
Dr. Divx to be a very easy program for converting VOB files from DVDs
into Divx. It's probably one of the more user friendly programs out there.
It's not free software, but I've had 100% success converting individual VOB files into Divx files. It also has a "batch mode" if you want to convert a series of VOB files. Something to try if your other options aren't working. They have a 15 trial version you could experiment with.

  6. when you load vob 1 into dr divx it will auto load the rest unless you choose not too. dr divx is a very simple tool to use and the results are pleasing enough. i would suggest staying with vdub/mod and just join the avi's after you encode them. it dont take to long to set up a batch.

  7. If you just want something to "work" first, you should perhaps have a look at XMPEG (a DivX minded build of FlaskMPEG).

Basically, use DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper to rip the entire disc (i.e., file mode), not just the movie. Then, use XMPEG to load the appropriate IFO file. Select the codec you want (i.e., DivX) and set the appropriate settings. Then, click on "Run".

Simple, and the results are quite good.

  8. I got XMpeg and have been messing with it...here's the problems I have NOW.

    1) set up for a 30 minute episode, but only get video for 10 seconds.
    2) screen blacks out after 10 seconds, but audio keeps going
    3) total length of avi is 27mb

argghhh....so close! Is there a way to change the # of frames converted??? or whatever needs to be done to get the WHOLE episode?

  10. only problem I had with FairUse is that it didn't mux the audio and video at the end. had to use AVIMux to do it myself and the resulting file plays fine in everything but the DivX player itself. could this be because FU uses its own modified codecs? Not sure what caused the mux problem.
