Would out of synch mostly occur while encoding from DVD to DivX (and Mux the audio into DivX later), or encoding from XviD to DivX (mux the audio later into DivX)? I am just curious when out of synch mostly occurs.

If it is done properly, with good software, you should not get sync problems at all, regardless of what type of conversion you are doing.

VBR MP3 used to be the cause of most sync problems when converting to DVD from Divx/Xvid encoded files. Most decent software now handles VBR MP3 without any problems, so I have not had a sync problem in quite a while. Even for th eolder software the work arounds are well known and covered extensively in the stickies in their respective forums.

Most sync problems reported now seem to come mostly from people who refuse to change their methods and software to something that does the job properly, because they have "always done it that way" (which frankly is the worst reason to keep doing something a particular way), or from newbies following old guides.

  3. Sync problems in DVD to AVI conversions are usually caused by one of two issues:

    1) The audio has a specified delay or advance and the software doesn't pay attention to it.

    2) The video has a variable frame rate and the software doesn't know how to deal with it. For example, the studio logo at the start of the video may have a different frame rate than the body of the film. Or the VOBs may have N-VOPs that a lot of software doesn't seem to handle properly.

Almost all of my tv captures from my hauppauge HVR1800 are out of sync somewhere in the file. MPEG2 PS seems to be a problematic format although the card and software are probably the problem. It could also be from the broadcasts which seem to always have corruption and at those points in the capture is when the sync problems occur. I also notice when I'm capturing from the tuner card while watching the program on my tv, the tuner card can be anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds behind the tv broadcast.

HD seems to be a lot more problematic than it's worth.
