I'm looking for a new IDE Controller card.
The one I have doesn't seem to accept anything other than HDD's, and I'd like to add a dvd-rom drive as a slave to one of them.
I just can't seem to configure the card to enable it to see the dvd-rom drive.
Can I get a controller card that will accept two HDD's as masters and then maybe a dvd-rom drive as a slave (of one the HDD's)?
    Thanks for any assistance,
    Will

Can't seem to find a retail stockist in the UK, only a distributor and they're not answering emails (yet)

    Will,

D'ya mean that the DVD-ROM doesn't appear in My Coputer,or it is not seen when the controller card is "detecting"?

Have to admit, I haven't, I don't think, hooked a CD-DVD to the card, will try it, tho', just to see.

Don't see why it wouldn't see it. They're both IDE devices, they speak the same language, unlike you and I.

Be back after the holiday ( Thankgiving here, kids get pissed when I monopolize the 'puter when they're here. I tell 'em go play with one of the others, but they like my recliner and this machine. Go figure!!)

Watching a 7 hour movie, just now. Wow, 3 disks. What the hell can I convert that to? 10th Kingdom, by name.

    Cheers,

    George

  6. Will,

I'm curious what IDE card you have. It sounds like the card cannot recognize an ATAPI interface. I didn't know there was such a thing outside of the non-RAID controller arrays.

Sorry, just changed the cables in the other machine, put the CD burner on ATA card IDE 2, it finds it when detecting but it's not in "My Computer" nor in System, under Device Manager.

Will try further, should work, don't know why it doesn't.

    Cheers,

    George

  9. Same thing with the Promise ATA100/RAID-0 controller on my ASUS board. This gets the WTF Award for the evening!

We have to be missing a real obvious step somewhere...

    Cheers,

    George

As I found out the hard way, not all IDE controllers are compatible with the slower IDE devices such as CD, DVD devices. You need ATA 33 compatibilty. The Promise TX2 and other cards do this. Some IDE 133 controllers don't. Always check to see if they are compatible with the slower ATA 33 devices.

I connect the dvd or cd-rom drive to the slave cable of one of the HDD's on the contoller and it's not seen when the card detects the devices.
It is as simple as connecting on the slave ribbon and setting the device to slave with the pin, right?

What does "scrum" mean in this context?

Are you saying England won the Cup? Boy, I misread the news.

    Sure did Georgie!
    Man, where have you been???????????
Drop goal by Jonnie Wilkinson in the last minute of extra time when the score was 17-17.
    Coming from a football/soccer fan...
....sport does not come better than that.
And, to add the cream to the pie, Wilkinson had been getting shit all week from the Aussie press insofar as he was a nobody
    Am I dreaming?

All I heard was the Aussies had a lock on it.

You do know we don't get a lot of coverage on Rugby, don't you? An inch or so in the recap column.

    Congrats.

The hell of it is about 80 nations send teams to the Cup, here, Football is the be all and end all of sports. A whole 60,000 people attend the big games, over there, 200,000 attend games.
