My pc recognizes the DVD drive fine.
The problem is that when I play a DVD there are artifacts running across the screen. It's pretty bad. In addition, the software installation cd that came with the drive which contains PowerDVD, myDVD, etc... will not install. It crashes giving a Windows error that Macromedia splash.exe encountered a problem and needs to shut down, etc...
I'm running Windows XP Professional.
I installed the latest firmware for the DVD, and I have the latest video driver.
Does anyone know if there is some kind of patch, XP or otherwise that could fix this or do I just have a bad DVD drive?

Just a guess but it could be an ASPI layer problem so I would download and run ForceASPI then re-boot the computer and see that helps.

This should be in DVD Writers and not DVD Recordes forum

Thanks, I tried ForceASPI 1.7 and rebooting but unfortunately I'm having the same problems. Running the ASPI Check utility showed that the ASPI is installed properly.
I wonder what else it could be...

Couple of things. Sony DVD drives are very good and whether or not you like the included software should not prevent the origional poster from being able to read the disc.
Is it a new drive? If so, I would exchange it for another 510A.

Actually the only software worth keeping that comes with the Sony is RecordNow.

Sounds like his windows is going bad, unable to install? Not a good sign.
YMMV -
Another one who blames the Sony drive when he can't get it to work on a crappy platform. If you are having problems installing a piece of software, it can usually be traced to a corrupt windows/System 32 installer. Sounds like it's time to start all over and wipe it clean with a freash install.
