The only way to use the flex-rec mode on the E20, is by doing a timer recording. The E30, E50 has a direct flex-rec mode. I had the E20 and got rid of it just because it didn't have the direct flex-rec feature. I only use the flex-rec mode when I backup a movie.

The E-20 had a "black level" bug in that it assumed all incomming video was set to the IRE 0.0 BLACK LEVEL standard. However this is only true of PAL video and Japanese NTSC. However NTSC in the USA/CANADA uses IRE 7.5 BLACK LEVEL standard.

So if you intend to record from USA/CANADIAN NTSC you want the E-50 since it allows you to adjust the input for either 0.0 IRE BLACK or 7.5 IRE BLACK

RCA remote won't work. It doesn't have all the special features that the E50 requires.

I'd hurry up and buy it now while the E-50 is still a current model. In a year or so when this model is replaced I wouldn't be surprised if the remote either goes up in price and/or become difficult to get.

Had this happen once with another peice of A/V equipment. It pays to buy an extra remote for something while you still can just in case you ever need it. The more expensive the equipment the more likely I am to buy a back-up remote "just in case".
