  1. I have a MPEG file that I want to rencode to I can make it smaller, but I can't get TMPGEnc to open any MPEG files. How do I get it to open them?

  2. I guess it is mpeg-2 as TmpGenc opens mpeg-1 files with no problems.

The very latest version of TmpGenc I believe has a native mpeg-2 decoder for this purpose, slightly older versions require the codec from PwerDvd or Windvd (or another, forget which) to be installed. If all else fails, open the mpeg file in DVD2AVI, create a project file (*.d2v), then open that as video and the dvd2avi saved audio file as audio.

  3. I did that but DVD2AVI only gave me a d2v file and no audio file

  4. You may have to change a setting in DVD2AVI.

Alternativley you can extract the audio by using the mpeg tools, de-multiplex option in TmpGenc.
