Hi,
I use an ATI 8500 DV card with the mmc 8.6 software. If I try to record free tv, the recording stops after about 2 minutes: "The program is copy protected." That is not true. Do you have any idea?
Kind regards
RMC

Recording a tv program is not illegal. Something is wrong with your computer or software. however I can't help you there. I don't have any ATI products.

It is true that everything on TV is copyrighted, down to the daily news, and infomercials.
There have to be settings in your Cap program to allow you to ignore.
How you bypass in ATI, if you are using ATI's software, I don't know, but none of the ones I use with 4 other brands has ever shown me that screen. -
I tried to capture the normal tv broadcast program received from the built in tv-tuner of the 8500 DV. The tuner seems to recognize a copy protection that is not there.

Fascinating that you get this message on broadcast TV. -
I don't think he is talking about brodcast TV in the sense of antennae.
I think he means the stuff you get for basic cable-basic dish, maybe the non-premium content, no HBO, no PTV.
Still, I don't know why the card would refuse to cap. Should be an ignore button, rather than just quit on him, 2 minutes in.
Cheers,

The new MMC 8.x bails out after 2 minutes with that message whenever it detects Macrovision. I have never had this message on Pay Cable channels, only on VHS. Though since I have applied the patch, if they started MV'ing pay cable I guess I wouldn't know it.

yeah.. doesn't it make you goboing
about not being able to
capture a pay channel or whatever, w/ a capture card (ATI rant) and yet,
you can record to your hearts content w/ any VCRSounds like ATI
is hitching for a ride w/ some butt'ing to get something in the end.
You know what I'm taling about here

I'm getting the same thing on my ATI 7500 AIW. Thanks for the links to the hacks.
Once question though, if I use something else to capture the signal, would I avoid having to run the hack at all. I can probably use Virtualdub or Ulead Videostudio to capture.
Thanks. -
It's distortion on the signal tripping off the ultra-sensitive MV DLL in ATI software.
Not the card's fault.
You can either get coax line filters (FM traps, DC blocks, etc) or download the ATI MV hacks. They are on lordsmurf.com in the ATI capture guides.
I'd not dump the ATI MMC. VS is nasty, and Vdub is VFW, not WDM as needed (and no, I don't like the VFW-WDM bridge mods, they aren't real good).
Be sure to get ATI MMC 8.1, 8.5 or 8.7 (only 8.7 if others not an option).Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
