I have a movie with a bitrate of 651kb/s. If I want to encode so I can put to disc I can either encode as VCD or SVCD.

For VCD the standard is 1150 and for SVCD it is 1600.

Is there any point in encoding to SVCD since the original file is 651kb/s. Can I actually make the movie look any better if I encode at a higher rate than 651?

Basically, How does bitrates work for DivX movies and whether there can be a choice between VCD or SVCD encoding?

    Regards

AVI bitrate has nothing to do with VCD or SVCD bitrate.

SVCD maximum is 2550(including Audio), not 1800.

What an AVI bitrate does is let you know what quality level it is capable of. 651 kbps is good for VCD quality. It may be capable of SVCD quality, but I doubt it.

    What resolution is the AVI?
