720x576................
should I deinterlaced during capture for this resolutiion?
my final source is pal vcd -
If your source is VHS or SVHS, then 352 x 576 is what you need. With PAL, capture higher doesn't help like with NTSC.
If your source is an amazing clean aerial transmission, try higher (704 x 576 or 720 x 576, depending what your card supports). The use of S-Video cables is needed for those framesizes! -
As you want VCD at the end of it there is no point in capturing at a higher resolution and then changing the size when you encode. PAL VCD is 352 x 288 so capture at that size to start with.

Recommended is 352x576 capture resolution with 2:1 resize in Virtualdub
I find it best to capture at full DVD size and reencode to VCD- have done full movies from TV that way-results are better than commercial VCDs- when i have used 352x288 size for capture the results have been crap- have been ashamed to admit they are my captures to family!!
