Hi,as you may have guessed I'm a total newbie, not at all technical in the very least.I live in a PAL Region 4 country (Australia) and I have purchased some DVD movies from the USA.

    NTSC Region 1.

So far,I've been able to rip my Australian purchased movies, but when I try to rip the American ones, the VOB file is perfect picture quality and the sound is skipping, out of synch and generally un-use-able.

Okay,I *think* it is called a VOB file. The file you get when you've just ripped a DVD and haven't touched it yet.

Where should I post this problem for the best advice? I don't have a DVD Burner,I do VCDs as back-ups of my originals.I do have a DVD ROM and have tried regionfree everything, have tried DVD X Copy but nothing is working.

  2. its not the VOB thats messy, its ur player and/or computer

either ur computer isnīt fast enough to display NTSC properly, therefore skips some sound
    or
ur player has wrong settings, like wrong framerate, no NTSC support, too many filters or something like that

try to encode it, virtualdub should be able to make a proper avi out of it anyway

Your best bet is to RIP the DVD in FILE MODE then use DVD2AVI to get a D2V project file (which is your source file for encoding purposes) and it will also spit out the AC-3 audio track(s).

You can then load the D2V directly into some programs (like TMPGEnc) while other programs will require a (simple) AviSynth AVS script to load it.

Sorry but I just re-read your original POST in this THREAD and you say you live in a PAL country but want to make some VCD discs from NTSC DVD discs.

So first of all we need to know if your TV and DVD player can only handle PAL or can they both also handle NTSC?

When you convert the NTSC DVD to VCD you can make it a NTSC VCD or you can make it a PAL VCD.

My suggestion is to make it a PAL VCD

    In which case go here:

    http://www.geocities.com/xesdeeni2001/StandardsConversion/

    You want section:
VII. NTSC (Video) DVD (29.97i Fps) -> PAL DVD (25i Fps)

    Good Luck

Well I'm guessing the original NTSC DVD had AC-3 audio correct? You have to convert the AC-3 to a WAV file using BeSweet or HeadAC3he then when you use TMPGEnc you input the WAV file as your AUDIO SOURCE.

What did YOU do to convert the audio?

I just let the program encode the audio on it's own, took all day to do the whole movie and I *think* the sound matches,I can't hear it well enough to judge.

    I'll try those tomorrow,thanks!!

Before I do this, perhaps there is a way I can rip off the video, then the sound and join them together? Would that be easier? What would I use for each task?
