I've got a DVD someone recorded for me a while back. Was intending on ripping out the video and using it for a project, but I can't. VLC and PowerDVD won't even play it. I can rip it with DVD Decrypter, and import the resulting VOB files into Premiere Pro, but the first three are mere seconds in length. I tried running the VOB files through VOB2MPG, and it spat out this:
Is there any way I can get to this footage? It used to work, because I remember watching it on my computer the day I got it.Version: VOB2MPG

try different drives to read the disc. if nothing will read it then the dvdr has most likely gone bad. the dyes used on some are not very good.

The VOB files I ripped with DVD Decrypter play fine in VLC, though, so it can't be the disc or the drive.

It seems people are mis-reading your first post constantly...
I'd try to re-rip it. Try more DVDDecrypter options....like....File Splitting - NONE or demuxing it while ripping. Also try enabling Stream Processing and if you see an entry marked as a "subtitle"....uncheck it and rip. That entry is usually caused by a DVD recorder menu. I know my dad's old Cyberhome DVD recorder would spit out discs like you are describing. A real bastard to work with. -
Think about it. You had to rip the disc to play the VOB files. If the disc were in good shape and your drive were functioning, you could play the disc without ripping it.
The problem most likely lies with the disc, since you could rip it, but sometimes one drive can be better at reading a defective burned disc than another.
You could try a data recovery program like ISOBuster or CDRoller, but it the disc is too far gone, they won't be able to recover everything.Last edited by usually_quiet; 18th Oct 2011 at 11:53. Reason: fix punctuation

I set File Splitting to 'none', but the log popped up with 'File Splitting - 1 GB'. I ended up with one functional m2v file, and three that didn't play at all, and just sat there when I tried opening them with VLC. The audio file plays right the way through, though. No streams except audio and video.

Koberulz - You can use DVD Decrypter to rip by IFO, ISO or Files. You have to set file splitting to None in the right place. Based on your explanation of what you want to do with the footage I recommend that you rip by IFO mode and NOT by ISO or Files. If you get file splitting to None for an IFO rip you should end up with one gigantic VOB file.

I did, but I was on the wrong tab. I just saw 'file splitting' and set it to 'none', rather than going through to IFO mode, which I was ripping in, and setting that file splitting to 'none', too. Once I did that, it worked. Imports into Premiere fine, as well. Thanks for the help.

Glad it worked. Sure sounds like that disc was made in an old CyberCrap recorder...
As I recall....they read as "Sonata" or something in DVDDecrypter. That will be stuck in my head forever.
