I seem to remember discussion here before about DVDShrink and a problem with forced subtitles.
I just backed up my brand new copy of Hidalgo using the latest version of DVDShrink, in reauthor mode, keeping only the main movie.
I then put away the new pressed DVD in the closet, and watched my newly created backup. Well along into the movie, I noticed that some of the characters were speaking in Arabic, and English subtitles were not automatically appearing. I dug up the remote, searched for 2 minutes, and found the "subtitle" button. Of course, by then I had to back up the movie and play that section again. There is an English translation in the subtitles, but it is not automatically popping up when needed. I believe this is what is known as "forced subtitles", is that correct?
I assume this works correctly in the original, I am too lazy to go dig up the original and try to find the correct spot in the movie to see if it works as I think it should. Am I correct in my thinking here, and if so, is there a workaround for DVDShrink?
Thanks in advance,
Henry Nettles
P.S. By the way, I thought this was an excellent movie, and I highly recommend it. The horse appeared to be the smartest character in the movie!

Yeah, Shrink's handling of forced subtitles could be better, but the workaround is easy enough.
When you made the backup copy you should have right clicked on the movie, gone to the subtitles section, and then set the forced subtitles stream to "default". Then the subtitles would be on as soon as the movie starts.
If you have a software player (I use PowerDVD), you can usually identify which stream you need by looking at which one is active when playing the original. -
FYI, if you use AnyDVD to transparently do this in the background (it acts as a layer between drive and software, transparently stripping protections), it does not change the DEFAULT, only removes the protections that prevent you from changing it. So, if the movie is set to start with a certain subtitle stream by default, it will do so even after you back it up, you just have the option to change it if you want.

Hi all.
There you go.

I've had the same problem but when using full disc mode (not re-author) - could this be a problem with settings in either dvd decryptor or anydvd? The forced sub was sub number 3, and from memory, it either turned the subs off or set it to sub number 1 or both.

h8sh8, have you tried ripping/encoding with DVD Shrink, without using DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD?
In Full-Disc mode, the streams default settings should be identical to the original. -
I dug the original out of the closet, and looked at it again. There are 6 subtitle streams. Number 1 is Engish and about 4 megabytes. Number 6 is also English, but only about .49 megabytes. I am assuming that number 6 is the forced subtitles, and I am re-authoring based on that assumption.

I'd think you assumed right, but if it's not too late, here is how to make sure...
- Play the DVD with WinDVD.
- Right-click on the movie while it's playing.
- Access the "Subtitle" sub-menu.
- Make a note of the subpicture being played.
In this example, the "Forced" subpicture stream would be #3 (same number in DVD Shrink).
