Does anyone know if the Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150 and WinTV PVR-350 have the same MPEG2 encoder? I don't really need the TV out or the FM that the PVR-350 has and if the MPEG2 encoder is the same then I can save about $40 to $50 and find the encoder I need at Circuit City. I've been to the Hauppauge site and around the forums here and don't see anyplace where these two are compared face to face. On a more general note, is there a better encoder than the Hauppauge out there? I figured it's the one to beat but I can be persuaded. :)

The PVR-250 or PVR-USB2 is what you should find.

The PVR-150 is a cost reduced version with flaws that seem resistrant to a fix. It has been over a year.

Use the forum search "PVR-150" to find the issues discussed.

    Thanks for the info edTV

From what I've read, the specs for PVR-150, PVR-250, and PVR-350 MPEG2 capture are all the same. I'll take your word for the problems with the PVR-150 settings because I've read them all over. What makes the PVR-250 so much better? USB is probably not a good option since only two of my computers have USB2 support.

AFAIK the mpeg2 encoders on the PVR-150 and PVR-350 are not the same. You might want to check out this info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauppauge_Computer_Works

From what I have read so far, most of the information on that page are correct, if not all. (sorry, didn't read thru the whole page)

Great wiki link on Hauppage. I finally know what the PVR-160 is that they sell at Fry's.
I notice they also have a profile for ATI Technologies and NVidia.
