I have a sony TVR18 Camcorder with 4-pin i/link output. Can I get any IEEE 1394 firewire cable and jam it in. I.E a 4-pin - 6-pin cable for transfer to the PC. The guy I got the camera from said I have to get a sony brand i.link cable. Before I spend any money can somone give me some advice.

In my opinion, no. My local store does not sell Sony fire wire cables, so I bought what they had. I wish I could remember the brand name, but I never heard of it before, and discarded the packaging. It is still working just fine with my Sony camera.

No you don't need a special firewire cable. Any 4to6 pin will do the job. I use the bundled firewire cable of my ADS Pyro to connect it with my sony trv50, no probs at all.
Cpu power is never enough -
4 wire if your unit has self contained power source. ie : your camera
6 wire adds 2 extra wires to power units with no external power source.
You do NOT need sony product. Generic cable will suffice.
