  12. Here's what you do:

    1) DVD5 backup

    Use DVD Decrypter.
Choose "Mode | ISO - Read", rip ISO image to HD
Choose "Mode | ISO - Write", burn image to disc

    2) DVD9 backups

    Rip entire DVD to HD
Load DVD in DVD Shrink (automatic/manually set to < 4.3GB)
    Backup
    Burn generated VIDEO_TS folder

That's pretty much it. Ripping the DVD removes CSS and macrovision. You can even re-set the region if need be. DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5 allows you to manually set the compression level for each VTS, but just leave it at auto if you want to do things 'simply'. Luck

  13. Why not use DVDshrink for all of them?

Make a folder VIDEO_TS, use DVDshrink to rip entire dvd to that folder.
Use your favorite burning program to Burn VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS to disk.

If the DVD is a 5 DVDshrink should ripp it with out compresion because it already fits!
If it's a DVD9 and actualy larger than a DVD R disk, then shrink will compress it to fit!

No need to worry about what kind of disk it is, DVD5 or DVD9 trying to decide what program to use for it. Just use shrink for em all!

Also I would get both, Ver 2.3 and 3beta5, FREE and sometime you might prefer one over the other? I normally use 3beta5, but both work well!

  14. I am also interested in knowing why you would use DVD Decrypter to send it to the hard drive rather than just use DVD shrink. I'm sure there's a good reason as I see this advice offered quite often. Thanks.

    Two reasons:
    1. Sometimes DVDShrink fails to crack the encryption
    2. DVD Decrypter can handle scratched DVDs (using the proper settings)

DVDDecrypter rips faster and it is a two-in-one (rip and burn ISOs)

  16. I pretty much always rip the DVD to the HD first. Normally with DVD Decrypter. There are several reasons for this:

Removes CSS/macrovision. The ripper in DVD Shrink isn't all that good.

DVD Decrypter allows me to rip in ISO mode. Nice for storing several rips on my HD without created several VIDEO_TS folders and lots of files. I can mount the images with Daemon tools as need. Nice for making multiple DVD backups or cut/pasting from multiple discs.

DVD Decrypter can rip faster than most rippers, and if I've already ripped why not just burn it.

    etc. etc.

But it's a personal choice. For example I burn my home authored DVDs with IMGTools/DVD Decrypter anyway. There is not one best way to do this, if it works for you then good enough. However, some ways are faster than others or produce superior quaility. You have to balance:

    time x complexity x money x speed x quaility

Normally you can only get two of those at a time (sometimes only 1). For example, the best DVD9 to single DVDR backup method quaility wise is to use the big3. But that's pretty complex and takes a lot of time (also costs a bit of money). You can use DVD Shrink for everything, it's simple and cost nothing, but quaility takes a hit. etc. etc.

  17. I'll give DVD Decrypter a try to then. I never tried it, started ripping with DVDshrink, never had a problem, and for my TV I can't tell a difference between the real disk and mine. BUt hey, I'm open to new things, ideas, and methods so I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
