  1. Yes, I'm aware that DVD-Shrink is long-since abandoned, and not useful for removing any modern DVD protection schemes. But I would still like to use it to compress unprotected data that I've managed to rip via other means.

Why? Because DVD-Shrink gives me precise control over what gets compressed/ignored, and what doesn't. I can copy a whole DVD, uncompressed to my hard drive, and then use DVD-Shrink to "nullify" the bloody previews, increase the compression on the extras, and decrease the compression on the main movie.

However, since I got my new system (i7-920, Win7 64-bit), DVD-Shrink won't run at all. And I mean that literally... no interface, no error messages. I double-click the icon, I see the Win7 "loading wheel" icon for a moment, and that's it. It's gone. I've played around with compatibility settings with no success.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? And more to the point, resolved it? Thanks much.

Where did you download it? I used http://download3.videohelp.com/dvdshrink32setup.zip

  3. I uninstalled and re-installed using the source you provided, and it had no effect on the problem. The Windows 7 Event Viewer shows the crash, but I'm not convinced that the information is useful:

Running it as administrator? Right click and run as administrator.

Yes... When I experimented with various compatibility modes, I checked the "Run as Administrator" box.

I found that if I copy the entire DVD to my HD (I use AnyDVD) then use the the ripped DVD as the source in DVDShrink it works fine.

  8. I'm having the same problem. However, if install it and run it from the installer - it's okay. If I exit and try to run it again from the Start menu, it crashes. Here's what it's showing:

I've tried all sorts of compatibility settings. I have successfully run it within a VirtualBox virtual machine running XP SP2.

  9. Thing is there are several dozen versions of DVDS. Why not compare what versions that you are using?

Decripter works fine. What gives? seems to be as a result of a Win7 update. Anyone find a solution I would like to know what it is.

It worked fine until a week ago? Do you remember any changes you made to your system then other than a windows update?

You could always try a system restore to the previous update.

I've used dvdshrink under windows 7 many times ... in fact I only used dvdfab hd decrypter as a front end for it if I wanted to encode to dvd ... and never had any problems whatsoever.

  12. I used Shrink and Nero Recode, both never had issues starting, but if I had preview enabled while loading/shrinking the DVD files the PC would freeze. Sometimes, it would still freeze while rendering the compressed files, but most times it worked. Just a note, I run Shrink with no compatibility or administrative changes (my user has admin privileges) and I use Nero 10.

I've had lots of problems with Windows 7 doing anything with video files. It was worse after I installed a CODEC pack; I couldn't play any video files without the PC freezing. I ran Microsoft Fix-it and it disabled all the CODECs and re-initialized Media Center/Player. Things improved I was able to play video files, but the PC would still freeze after a while (just took longer).

I figured it was a display driver issue, the card I was using was only DirectX 9 (ATI, but I can't say if that would also apply to Nvidia or Intel DX9 card, though I wouldn't be surprised). I replaced the card with an ATI HD4650 DX10 and everything is working fine.
