Find your Source Settings and change it from composite to S-video.

Does the vhs output S-Video, they usually don't unless they are S-VHS machines. You won't display anything if there is nothing there to display.

  5. He is using scart out which has svideo on the other end of lead ( monster cable ) Tech in shop who sold vcr & lead seemed knowledgeable about the setup. ( we hope )
He has returned the pinacle card & waiting for DAC 100 as we were unable to get hold of ADVC 100,hopefully new setup will improve things.
Thanks for your comments B/R Mike

If he's using scart out then there may well be an S-Video plug on the end of the cable. But as I said before, there won't be anything coming out of it if the vhs player doesn't output S-Video. There are 21 pins on a scart connection but often many of them are not used. The scart is a European standard connection for video devices and can cater for everything from a mono monitor (where only three pins are needed) to auto-switching, bi-directional component (as opposed to composite) video and audio (where you need all 21).

Suggest you try plugging the S-Video plug into a TV S-Video socket to make sure you have a signal there in the first place. I'd be willing to bet you haven't.

No point in changing the capture hardware, use composite or change the vhs machine for an svhs machine which definately will give an S-Video output.

  7. Thanks for your help Richard,as i said the card has been returned (reading users comments it`s not up to much ) the replacement has good reports.
VHS has svideo out so as you suggest will try svideo lead when unit arrives. Composite did work on the card but quality was poor.
