  1. Hello,
Just wondering, since I have seen other in other threads that this would allow a better bitrate while cutting file size in half when copying from a VHS tape to DVD. For more info, see this thread:

    Most of them write 704x480, 352x480 and 352x240 MPEG2.
I know at least one Panasonic does this.

  3. Better question from my experience will be. How to get Full D1 resolution

All the recordings on my friends Panasonic E30 that I made from VHS were 352x480 instead of 704x480.

Most standalone DVD recorders have quality settings (like the VHS SP,LP,EP). Perhaps the HQ setting is the DVD one and the lower quality settings not only decrease the bitrate but also the frame size.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

    XP 1 hour 720x480
    SP 2 hour 720x480
    LP 4 hour 352x480
    EP 6 hour 352x480

    on Magnavox/philips DVD+R recorders

Are you sure about this ? I used SP mode on Panasonic E30 to record from VHS and it is 252x480. Did I miss any settings ?

BTW: Panasonic makes 704x480 not 720 mpeg stream... I believe.
