  1. I am trying to play back some pal dvdrs on my dvd player but they dont play. Ntsc plays fine. Would the region code be the problem or is it just not compatible. There is a way to change the region code but would it make a difference in playback?

  2. PAL and NTSC signals are incompatible. most PAL equipment has support for NTSC now but NTSC equipment doens't support PAL for the most part. Region isn't going to effect this any.

Many, but not all, newer DVD players will output an NTSC signal from a PAL disc. They have internal conversion to do this. My Daewoo DVD-S150 does this, and it cost only $47.00 from Sam's club. What make and model DVD player do you have?

  4. I have a Sony DVPNS 315. Does anyone know where I can find the guide for converting avi's from pal to ntsc? I see all the formats in the guides section but cant seem to find one for avi's.

Unfortunately, the Sony model of DVD player that you have is NTSC only. You might wanna pick up a cheapo APEX or Daewoo or Mintek to play back PAL DVD's. In order to play AVI's on your standalone, you'll have to convert them. That is, unless you buy a DVD player that supports AVI/DivX/MPEG-4, such as the LiteOn LVD-2001 (~$150.00). If you just want to change the format, TMPGEnc has the option to change from NTSC to PAL, and vice versa. Just specify it before you begin your encode.
